The Pittsburgh Steelers are officially rolling.
Pittsburgh improved to 5-2 on the season and extended its winning streak to three with a 16-10 victory over the New Orleans Saints on Sunday in France. Aaron Rodgers protected the ball, made just enough throws to win and then used his legs on a third-down scramble as his team secured the win.
On the other side, the Saints missed a number of opportunities to take the lead thanks to second-half mistakes as Tyler Shough and Co. managed just 10 points and fell to 2-5 on the campaign.
Sunday was a golden opportunity for Pittsburgh to build on its early season momentum against a team that struggled out of the gate, and it set the initial tone when Rodgers dialed back the clock, escaped the pocket and found DK Metcalf for a deep ball that set up Darnell Washington for the game's first touchdown.
Washington making a catch like he did in the end zone at his size was unfair for the New Orleans defense, but he wasn't the only one making impressive plays for the AFC North team.
T.J. Watt nearly came away with a fumble recovery on a sack, but Shough was ruled down. It wasn't the only near turnover for the Saints in the first half, as Shough also fumbled out of bounds while diving for the goal line before Kendre Miller's lost fumble at the goal line was overturned.
It was an exercise in frustration and near misses for the Steelers defense, especially when the drive ended with a fourth-down touchdown pass from Shough to Devaughn Vele.
To Pittsburgh's credit, it seized momentum right back when it ended the first half with the lead thanks to a perfectly executed field goal in the final seconds with the clock running after Rodgers took a sack.
And a number of Saints' mistakes that undercut scoring opportunities kept that momentum on the Steelers' side throughout the second half.
Payton Wilson's interception of Shough in the red zone ended a drive of more than seven minutes for the Saints in the third quarter before Daniel Carlson's missed field goal in the fourth quarter ended a drive of nearly six minutes.
Yet the Saints were still down just six points late in the game because Chase Young and the defense was playing so well against Rodgers. That unit gave Shough multiple opportunities to take the lead, but the quarterback never delivered.
The next drive after the missed field goal ended in a punt after Shough took a sack, and the Steelers used the rest of the clock to put away the win.
Now Pittsburgh turns its attention to a key divisional game against the Cleveland Browns while the Saints head into their bye on the wrong side of yet another result.
