Eagles sign QB Joe Milton from Cowboys' practice squad with Jalen Hurts out
Hurts is set to miss this week after a blood clot was found in his leg.
With starting quarterback Jalen Hurts out for Week 6 (and possibly beyond) , the Philadelphia Eagles are turning elsewhere to pad their QB room. The Eagles are signing third-year QB Joe Milton off the Dallas Cowboys' practice squad, according to multiple reports.
Under NFL rules, Milton will join Philadelphia's 53-man roster, rather than the Eagles' practice squad, after being signed.
Hurts was ruled out for Sunday's matchup against the Carolina Panthers after a superficial blood clot was found in his leg. He is set to undergo treatment, but it's unclear whether he will have to miss more time after this Sunday; however, the addition of Milton seems to indicate that Hurts may be out for longer than just this week.
Milton, who was selected by the New England Patriots in the sixth round of the 2024 draft, will now be on his third team in less than three seasons. He has taken limited snaps in five games across the past two seasons, and has yet to get a start in the NFL.
The signing also marks an unusual transaction between the Eagles and the Cowboys, who are longtime NFC East rivals.
Milton will join backup QB Tanner McKee and rookie Cole Payton in Philadelphia's QB room, likely entering Sunday's game as the third-string quarterback. McKee, a former 2023 sixth-round pick, is expected to get the start against the Panthers.
It will be just the third start for the 26-year-old McKee, who has played in just six games across the past two seasons with the Eagles. McKee's last start came in Week 18 of last season, with the backup giving Hurts a rest before the postseason; McKee was sacked three times and threw an interception in an eventual 24-17 loss to the Washington Commanders.
