The Philadelphia Eagles confirmed running back Will Shipley won't return to Sunday's game against the Jacksonville Jaguars after suffering a foot injury.
Shipley scored Philly's first touchdown in the second quarter before exiting.
His absence leaves Dameon Pierce as the No. 1 option on the ground with Saquon Barkley sidelined because of a hamstring issue.
From a fantasy football perspective, the fifth-year ball-carrier is unlikely to emerge as a must-add on the waiver wire after Week 5. Following an encouraging rookie season in 2022, he has combined to run for 745 yards and four touchdowns in 30 appearances.
The Eagles only promoted Pierce to the active roster earlier this week. He signed to the practice squad in September after failing to make the final August cut.
Somebody obviously has to carry the ball for Philadelphia, and the list of internal options is getting thin. Tank Bigsby is on injured reserve, and it's too early to forecast the statuses of Shipley and Barkley in Week 6 against the Carolina Panthers.
Maybe Pierce gets the nod against Carolina. He showed little with the Houston Texans and Kansas City Chiefs in the previous three years, though, and the state of Philly's offensive line does him and every other running back few favors.
The Eagles traded guard/center Cam Jurgens to the Baltimore Ravens and watched Lane Johnson retire. Another multi-time Pro Bowler, Landon Dickerson, is on IR.
Fantasy managers would be advised to wait and see how the backfield evolves before considering any accompany moves.
