Chiefs CB Christian Roland-Wallace ejected after throwing punch vs. Chargers
Roland-Wallace threw a punch in retaliation at Chargers guard Alex Harkey after he was shoved away.
Kansas City Chiefs cornerback Christian Roland-Wallace was ejected from Sunday's 22-6 win over the Los Angeles Chargers at the beginning of the fourth quarter for throwing a punch.
Following a 3-yard rush by Chargers running back Omarion Hampton, guard Alex Harkey finished off a block on Roland-Wallace by pushing him away from the pile after the play ended. That drew a penalty from officials.
Roland-Wallace then responded by turning around and throwing a punch at Harkey as he was down on his knees. That occurred within view of two officials who immediately ejected the cornerback from the game.
Harkey was penalized for unsportsmanlike conduct for the shove and both teams were called for offsetting penalties on the play. At the time, the Chargers trailed the Chiefs, 19-6.
Roland-Wallace appeared to get an interception off Justin Herbert early in the second quarter. But the play was negated with a roughing the passer penalty on defensive end Ashton Gillotte.
A reserve cornerback, Roland-Wallace came into Sunday's matchup with four total tackles. He is in his third season with Kansas City, signing as an undrafted free agent out of Arizona in 2024. In 32 career games, Roland-Wallace has 2 career interceptions, 72 tackles, 4 passes defended and 1 forced fumble.
Before being ejected, Roland-Wallace had 1 tackle for loss and 4 tackles overall in the Chiefs' win, which improved them to 5-0 this season. The Chargers dropped to 0-6, one of the NFL's two winless teams. (The 0-5 Miami Dolphins are on a bye this week.)
Patrick Mahomes completed 23 of 30 passes for 272 yards and 1 interception in Kansas City's win. Kenneth Walker III rushed for 128 yards and 2 TDs on 19 carries, and Xavier Worthy tallied 7 receptions for 73 yards.
For Los Angeles, Herbert threw for 204 yards and 1 INT, completing 22 of 37 passes. He was also the Chargers' leading rusher with 26 yards on 5 carries, which surely indicates the offense's lack of success against the Chiefs. Quentin Johnston caught a pass for 57 yards.
