New NFL Rumors on Troy Aikman's Dolphins Role Amid Questions Around 'Monday Night Football' Future
Hall of Fame quarterback and ESPN color commentator Troy Aikman doesn't currently have a role with the Miami Dolphins as his future on the Monday Night Football broadcast is up in the air, according to Mark Maske of Front Office Sports.
Hall of Fame quarterback and ESPN color commentator Troy Aikman doesn't currently have a role with the Miami Dolphins as his future on the Monday Night Football broadcast is up in the air, according to Mark Maske of Front Office Sports.
Per Maske, Aikman has no "formal and ongoing agreement" to be a Dolphins consultant after previously operating in the role on a temporary basis during the 2026 offseason.
Aikman is in the final year of a five-year deal with ESPN that pays him $18 million per season, via Dan Shanoff of The Athletic.
Front Office Sports' Ryan Glasspiegel also reported that there has been "tension" between Aikman and longtime broadcast partner Joe Buck, who reportedly received a new contract from ESPN.
Aikman addressed his relationship with Buck during a Thursday appearance on 96.7 The Ticket in Dallas (via Joseph Hoyt of the Dallas Morning News ).
"There's probably a time and a place for all that. I don't know if now is the time," Aikman said. "I don't know if it's hard to figure out kind of what happened. I'll broadcast through this season and I'll be a free agent at the end of the year and kind of see what happens. I'm looking forward to whatever the rest of this season does hold and the Super Bowl and all that and where my next landing spot may be."
Aikman could end up joining a new network once the 2026 season comes to a close, although it's worth noting that he faced restrictions in the lead-up to Monday Night Football broadcasts this year due to his role with the Dolphins.
He's required to remotely attend production meetings and is not permitted to attend practices at team facilities, per ESPN .
Maske noted Friday that Aikman's official consulting role in Miami was limited to the team's searches for a new head coach and general manager. Jeff Hafley and Jon-Eric Sullivan were eventually hired for the respective positions.
