Detroit Lions linebacker Jack Campbell has been placed on injured reserve after suffering a serious neck injury that led to his hospitalization last Sunday.

The Lions announced Campbell's designation Saturday ahead of a Sunday afternoon game at the Miami Dolphins.

Campbell said in a Wednesday statement he had "full movement" in his lower body and is "continuing to make progress with movement" in his upper body.

"I know there's still work ahead, but I remain very optimistic," Campbell said in his update. "I'm taking things one day at a time, staying positive, and focusing on getting better."

The Lions said, as of Monday, Campbell remained in a local hospital. Head coach Dan Campbell said in his latest update on Friday the linebacker "continues to improve."

"This is about, how would he prepare, how would he play?" the head coach said Friday. "Those are the standards for us going into this game. We owe it to him."

Campbell suffered his injury while attempting a tackle in the fourth quarter of the Lions' win over the Vikings. He did not move after falling and was treated by medical staff on the field before being carted off.

After racking up a career-high 176 tackles and receiving his first First-Team All-Pro selection last season, Campbell agreed to a four-year, $81 million extension that runs through the 2030 season.

Campbell led the Lions with 54 tackles, including one for loss, in six contests heading into last Sunday's game.

Veteran linebackers Derrick Barnes and Malcolm Rodriguez will be handling communication duties between the Lions defense and coordinator Kelvin Sheppard in Campbell's absence, per DetroitLions.com's Tim Twentyman .

The Lions will hope that system allows the team to build on its 5-2 start to the season and continue competing for the top spot in the NFC North when Sunday's matchup kicks off at 1 p.m. ET in Miami.
