NFL commissioner Roger Goodell finalizes 4-year extension through 2030 season

Roger Goodell is sticking around. The NFL commissioner reached agreement on a four-year extension through the 2030 season, the league announced Sunday.

Teams were informed about the extension Sunday, with the compensation committee sharing a letter with full ownership. The committee is made up of NFL team owners John Mara (Giants), Shad Khan (Jaguars), Jimmy Haslam (Browns), Michael Bidwill (Cardinals), Greg Penner (Broncos) and chairman Robert Kraft (Patriots).

In the letter, the committee said it was "pleased to announce" the extension, and that the group had worked with "an independent third-party compensation consultant" throughout the negotiation process, via ESPN's Adam Schefter .

"To that end, the agreement is heavily performance based, with more than 95% of the total compensation tied to Roger's and the NFL's performance measured against various metrics and at the discretion of the Compensation Committee," the letter said, via Schefter. "We believe we are very fortunate to have Roger at the helm for the next four years."

Goodell's new contract will end March 31, 2031. Notably, March 2031 is also when the NFL's current collective bargaining agreement will expire.

After decades as an NFL executive, Goodell was hired as the sixth commissioner of the league just ahead of the 2006 season, succeeding Paul Tagliabue. In 20 years at the helm, he has overseen multiple major changes, including the creation of the NFL's player-conduct policy in 2007, the continued growth of the sport overseas and the league's slow-but-steady attempts to mitigate head injuries.

Only Pete Rozelle, who held the role for 30 seasons, has stayed in the position longer. Goodell is entering his 21st season.

Though fans are not known to love him — Goodell gets booed on nearly every stage he enters — team owners clearly embrace him and the growth he has helped oversee, with league revenue ballooning to $14.5 billion this past season, via Sportico .

At the time that this current deal expires, Goodell will have just celebrated his 72nd birthday.

In the meantime, the commissioner is likely to pursue a few projects. Goodell has continued to push the idea of adding an international NFL team , and the growth of flag football as a sport ahead of the 2028 Olympics. He will also have to deal with more controversial things, like the league's diversity policies (especially after no Black head coaches were hired in the most recent head-coaching cycle) and the Chicago Bears' exploration of a stadium in Indiana , which Goodell has helped with in the past .

Goodell, who has overseen negotiations for two NFL CBAs in his tenure, will need to use that experience ahead of the next round of negotiations in 2031. Given the unease around negotiations in MLB , and the increasing economic growth in the NFL, this next CBA may be particularly thorny.
