Eagles release RB Dameon Pierce with injury settlement
The Eagles have released running back Dameon Pierce with an injury settlement, ending his stint in Philadelphia after he was placed on injured reserve
The Philadelphia Eagles have parted ways with another running back, releasing Dameon Pierce with an injury settlement as the team continues to deal with injuries and uncertainty at the position. According to NFL Communications , Philadelphia reached an injury settlement with Pierce on Friday, ending his brief stint with the organization less than two weeks after placing him on injured reserve.
Pierce appeared in three games for Philadelphia, recording 96 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 37 carries. The former Houston Texans running back had emerged as an important contributor amid the Eagles ' mounting injuries before suffering an undisclosed injury during the fourth quarter of Philadelphia's Week 7 loss to the Dallas Cowboys.
The Eagles placed Pierce on injured reserve Oct. 28, promoting former Dallas Cowboys running back Jaydon Blue from the practice squad to take his spot on the active roster.
Dameon Pierce's brief Eagles tenure ends
Philadelphia initially signed Pierce to its practice squad before the regular season began, giving the team an experienced option behind Saquon Barkley. The Eagles promoted Pierce to the active roster Oct. 7 after placing Tank Bigsby on injured reserve. With Barkley battling injuries and Will Shipley also sidelined, Pierce provided a physical running presence and became part of Philadelphia's backfield rotation.
Pierce originally entered the NFL as a fourth-round pick by Houston in the 2022 NFL Draft. He rushed for 939 yards and four touchdowns as a rookie, establishing himself as a productive downhill runner before injuries and changes to the Texans' backfield reduced his role.
His opportunity in Philadelphia came during a difficult stretch for the Eagles, who have struggled to establish a consistent rushing attack despite entering the season with significant expectations.
The injury settlement allows Pierce and the Eagles to move forward separately rather than keeping the running back on injured reserve for the remainder of his recovery.
What's next for Eagles' running back rotation?
Philadelphia enters Sunday's Week 9 matchup against the New York Giants with Barkley continuing to manage hamstring and back injuries. The veteran was limited during Friday's practice but did not receive a game-day injury designation.
Blue remains on the active roster and provides additional depth, while Elijah Mitchell has been available as a practice squad option. The Eagles are also awaiting the return of injured running backs Bigsby and Shipley.
The running game remains a significant concern for an offense averaging just 17.1 points and 265.3 total yards per game. Philadelphia has struggled to consistently create running lanes, sustain drives, and generate explosive plays during its six-game losing streak.
Pierce's departure removes another experienced option from the backfield, although his placement on injured reserve had already taken him out of the immediate rotation.
The Eagles will host the Giants on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET at Lincoln Financial Field before entering their Week 10 bye, hoping to establish a more productive rushing attack with Joe Milton III making his first start at quarterback.
