Upon his arrival to the Pittsburgh Steelers before the 2025 season, veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers had an interesting priority.
Steelers backup quarterback Will Howard told Jori Epstein of Yahoo Sports that on the first day of last season's training camp, Rodgers had him create a Google Doc with his hand signals.
"He gave me kind of the baseline of like, 'All right, hitch, slant, routes, a couple of combinations here and there, some formation signals …'" Howard said. "We would kind of evolve it as we went. So it started off with probably 25, 30 signals and then it ended up being like 75 by the end of [the season]."
Epstein noted that she received coach and player estimates on hand signals from other teams, and Rodgers' 75 far exceeds the Denver Broncos' 15-25, Baltimore Ravens' 20-30, and Philadelphia Eagles and Seattle Seahawks' 50-60.
Rodgers has always been known for his detailed approach to the game, but even the most meticulous players can have trouble remembering all 75 gestures.
"It's a lot of signals," Steelers receiver DK Metcalf told Epstein. "But I mean, they help us win football games at the end of the day when we're all connected."
Still, at 42 years old, it's safe to say that Rodgers won't be changing his approach in what is likely his final NFL season.
"He definitely takes pride in the signals," Steelers receiver Ben Skowronek said. "And then sometimes he signals something [in practice] that maybe he used in the past and you're like, 'What the f--k is that, Aaron?'"
Rodgers and the Steelers will try to improve to 3-1 when they face the Cleveland Browns (2-1) on Thursday Night Football .
