FSU running back signs with NFC North team

Roydell Williams will have the opportunity to play for an NFL team.

The former FSU running back was not selected during the 2026 NFL Draft but has signed with the Detroit Lions as the preseason nears its conclusion. The team posted the info to their X page, although details of the contract were not disclosed.

Williams spent two seasons with the Seminoles, joining the team as a transfer from the Alabama Crimson Tide in 2024. At FSU, he played in 10 games and rushed for 99 yards and two touchdowns, but was injured for much of his time in Tallahassee. With the Crimson Tide, he totaled 1,165 rushing yards and scored 11 touchdowns.

He reunites with Alabama teammate Jahmyr Gibbs in Detroit, who is their feature back. Detroit has been looking for depth at the running back position, and it's possible Williams shores it up.

The Detroit Lions went 9-8 last season under head coach Dan Campbell, missing the playoffs last season in the suddenly hyper-competitive NFC North. The Lions have the sixth-easiest strength of schedule in the league this season, so whether they can bounce back and return to the playoffs remains to be seen.
