Due to Travis Hunter getting minimal snaps on offense, the Jacksonville Jaguars star's performance is hard to measure, given his high draft pick. Although he has helped drive head coach Liam Coen's squad to the league's top-scoring defense.
Liam Coen Defends Two-Way Star Travis Hunter's Role
Head coach Liam Coen brushed off the noise surrounding his star player's playing time. He explained that the Jaguars' top priority is team success rather than managing individual metrics: "He cares about winning," Coen said in the press conference. "That's what he cares about. Like, and all the other stuff, the reps, where we picked him, does that — I don't give two Fs about value. And neither does he. We care about winning. And that's it."
Earlier in May, Hunter, on external noise to dual-position play, said , "That room goes both ways. I go in there every single day for about 15, 30 minutes throughout the day. Just going there and continuously burn out reps. I can burn out 30, 40 reps in 15 minutes every time I go in there."
Last season, Hunter made it clear he would rather walk away from the entire sport than accept a single-position restriction:
"It's never playing football again," he said . "Because I've been doing it my whole life, and I love being on the football field. I feel like I could dominate on each side of the ball, so I really enjoy doing it."
A major knee injury cut short Hunter's debut season. The Jaguars (who picked him second overall in 2024 NFL Draft) are easing him back into the offense.
