The Los Angeles Chargers have gone from potential playoff contender to winless and the projected No. 1 pick in the 2026 draft order in the span of six weeks.

Jim Harbaugh's team lost again on Sunday to the Kansas City Chiefs. The defeat combined with the Miami Dolphins' bye week and the Tennessee Titans' win over the Indianapolis Colts pushed the Chargers up to No. 1 as the only 0-6 team in the NFL.

The good news for the Chargers is that they don't need a quarterback in a draft class that is looking worse by the week at the position.

However, the Chargers do need a wide receiver and one of the best prospects in recent memory plays that position.

Ohio State's Jeremiah Smith might be the surest thing in the draft class based off seven weeks of performances in college football.

The silver lining to a bad Chargers season might be the ability to land Smith in April.

Jeremiah Smith is looking more and more like the safest pick in the 2027 draft class.

The Ohio State wide receiver is 16 yards away from the 1,000-yard mark in mid-October.

Smith had an average 68-yard, one-touchdown performance in Ohio State's win over the Indiana Hoosiers on Saturday.

Entering the college football season, Smith was viewed as a top prospect along with quarterbacks, like Arch Manning and Dante Moore.

However, injuries and poor play from the majority of the draft-eligible quarterbacks opened the door for Smith to be the clear-cut No. 1 pick.

The Chargers could use some help for Justin Herbert. Smith would be the ideal partner for the veteran quarterback. He'd be an instant upgrade over Ladd McConkey and Quentin Johnston.

A lot of things have to be fixed for the Chargers to be a competitive team again, but if they don't figure things out in 2026, Smith could be waiting for them to restart the franchise's trajectory in 2027.

Darian Mensah might be the best quarterback prospect in the 2027 draft class.

The Miami Hurricanes signal-caller threw for 326 yards and three touchdowns in his team's double-overtime triumph over the Florida State Seminoles on Saturday.

Mensah's thrown for 1,764 yards and 18 touchdowns in his first season at Miami. He only has one interception, which he threw against FSU.

At the moment, Mensah stands out in a class where Arch Manning's disappointed and Dante Moore has been sidelined due to an injury.

C.J. Carr struggled in Notre Dame Fighting Irish's loss to the BYU Cougars on Saturday night and Drew Mestemaker has been good in some stretches for the Oklahoma State Cowboys.

The Dolphins should know a lot about Mensah with him playing in the same city. He might end up as the best fit the Dolphins if they'd like to move on from Malik Willis after one season.

Mensah could also be a good fit with the Tennessee Titans, if they want to move on from Cam Ward.

Miami and Tennessee are the most quarterback-needy teams in the top five of the current draft order. The New York Jets are an interesting franchise to watch as well in the quarterback conversation as the season goes on.
