A North Carolina football community is grieving after 13-year-old Caden Sorrell died following a sudden medical emergency during practice. The Northwest Guilford Middle School student suffered cardiac arrest on Sunday, Aug. 30, according to his family. Despite emergency treatment and intensive efforts to save him, Sorrell’s condition became too severe. The treatment can temporarily support the heart and lungs when they are unable to function properly.Despite those efforts, Sorrell’s family said the damage was ultimately too extensive.The family described the loss as especially painful because Sorrell leaves behind his twin brother and three other siblings. His loved ones are now dealing with grief while also trying to understand how a young athlete could be lost so suddenly.His family said doctors believe an underlying genetic condition may have contributed to his death. No specific condition has been identified publicly, and his cause of death has not been officially disclosed. His four siblings are expected to undergo testing as the family seeks more information.The school community learned of Sorrell’s death on Sunday. Principal CeCe Matson shared a message of grief with families and students.“Today, our Northwest Middle School family is grieving the loss of one of our students. There are no easy words to make sense of losing a child, and our hearts are with the family, friends, classmates, and all who loved him,” school principal CeCe Matson wrote in a Facebook post.Northwest Guilford Middle School community remembers CadenFollowing Sorrell’s death, the school’s Parent Teacher Student Organization created an outdoor memorial where students, families and community members can leave flowers, messages and other tributes.The PTSO urged people to remember Sorrell and support those closest to him during the difficult days ahead.“There are no right words for a loss like this,” the PTSO wrote in part on Facebook. “We simply want our community to know that this space is there for anyone who wishes to honor and remember a very special member of our Viking family. Please continue to keep Caden Sorrell’s family and all those who loved him in your thoughts and prayers.”Matson also encouraged students and families to lean on one another as they process the tragedy.“As we grieve this loss, let us lean on one another and extend compassion to those around us. A caring heart and gentle presence can mean so much right now,” she wrote.Sorrell’s football team is scheduled to hold a vigil on Wednesday, Sept. 2.
