Ex-NLF player, analyst Mark Sanchez to plead guilty in drunken downtown brawl

INDIANAPOLIS — Former NFL player and Fox Sports analyst Mark Sanchez filed a guilty plea Thursday in his case involving a drunken fight downtown that resulted in Sanchez being stabbed and hospitalized after attacking a 69-year-old man.

Sanchez faced multiple charges after the incident at 12:30 a.m. Oct. 4, including felony battery causing serious bodily injury, battery resulting in bodily injury, unauthorized entry of a motor vehicle and public intoxication.

Sanchez's case was set to go before a jury next week. The details of the plea deal filed in Marion County Superior Court 21 have not been released. IndyStar reached out to Sanchez's attorney, Jennifer Lukemeyer, but did not immediately receive a response.

Sanchez also asked in his filing Thursday that a sentencing hearing be set. The judge in the case has not yet accepted the plea nor set a sentencing.

"This incident brought significant national attention to our city, including false narratives spread by commentators and public officials before the evidence was available," Zachary A. Myers , former U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Indiana and a litigation partner with McCarter & English , said in a statement to IndyStar. "Now that Mark Sanchez intends to plead guilty to a crime, the public will want to see whether he will be treated the same as others who commit similar offenses."

Sanchez was in Indy to cover the Indianapolis Colts-Las Vegas Raiders game. The fight began when Sanchez became upset that the 69-year-old man parked his work box truck at a loading dock to collect used cooking oil, court documents state.

Sanchez was stabbed shortly before 12:30 a.m. Oct. 4 in an alleyway near Loughmiller's Pub & Eatery . He suffered stab wounds to his upper torso and was rushed to Eskenazi Hospital in critical condition. Later in the day, he was upgraded to stable condition.

Court documents indicate the 69-year-old man, who suffered a laceration to his left cheek, was defending himself. He was treated and released from Methodist Hospital. Photos of the man shared with IndyStar show him on a hospital bed, bloodied, with a neck brace and a large gash on the left side of his face.

"This incident should never have happened," said Marion County Prosecutor Ryan Mears, at the time. "What began as a disagreement between a 38-year-old former professional athlete and a 69-year-old man should not have escalated into violence or left anyone seriously injured."

In November, Fox Sports fired Sanchez, who came to the network in 2021 as a game analyst, and replaced him with Drew Brees.

Sanchez had a 10-year NFL career, including four seasons with the New York Jets and time in Philadelphia, Dallas and Washington. He retired in 2019.
