49ers reportedly signed Kyle Shanahan to extension during offseason, have secured head coach for foreseeable future

In the wake of a statement-making season-opening win overseas , news broke that the San Francisco 49ers had quietly secured their head coach for the foreseeable future this offseason.

Less than 24 hours after the 49ers' dominant 27-7 win over the Los Angeles Rams in Melbourne, Australia, Tom Pelissero of The Ringer and Netflix reported Friday that San Francisco had previously signed Kyle Shanahan to an extension.

Shanahan, now 46 and in his 10th season leading the Niners, was reportedly believed to be under contract through 2027 prior to his new deal.

Per Pelissero's report, Shanahan's latest extension arrived during the same offseason in which Shanahan took the blame for a July car crash he was involved in , an accident that sidelined him during training camp. He told reporters that he was reaching for his fallen cell phone just before the collision.

Although the other driver — a 21-year-old woman erroneously reported at fault at first — didn't suffer any injuries, per Palo Alto Police, Shanahan sustained a broken nose, multiple broken ribs and a broken hand, along with a severe concussion and a gash near his eye that required several stitches.

When illustrating the scene for reporters, Shanahan said his iPhone slipped off his lap and landed between the seat and the middle console of his car. As he tried to collect the phone, he veered into oncoming traffic, Shanahan explained.

"I went down to look for it and took my eyes off the road for two seconds," Shanahan said, via ESPN . "And as I was coming up, the airbags hit me in my face and they broke my nose and then they said the visor really gashed me."

Despite Shanahan willingly taking accountability for the crash, he wasn't cited by police in the aftermath of the incident. Palo Alto Police said in a statement to ESPN that the citation decision came down to officer discretion.

"Neither party in this situation was provided preferential treatment," the statement read.

Led by assistant head coach Chris Foerster, other 49ers staffers filled the temporary void left by Shanahan. That said, he was back in time to coach San Francisco for preseason games, and he oversaw the Niners' head-turning win in Australia this week.

Shanahan has compiled an 83-67 record at the helm of a franchise he's led to two Super Bowl appearances.

He got the job after helping the Atlanta Falcons to a massive Super Bowl LI lead over the New England Patriots during the 2016 season. Despite that infamous collapse, his extensive résumé as an offensive coordinator wooed the 49ers. Unfortunately for Shanahan, he's also come up shy of the Lombardi Trophy in San Francisco, too.

Yet his schematic influence and ingenuity are undeniable. He's authored five 10-plus-win seasons while in charge, including a 12-win campaign last season that made him an NFL Coach of the Year candidate considering how many injuries the Niners had to overcome.

The injuries haven't slowed. Regardless, Shanahan's off to an promising start this season, reportedly with a new extension in tow.
