Marquette surges past Brookfield East for Greater Metro win

Marquette University pulled away from Brookfield East, 49-21, on Friday, Sept. 25, at Hart Park in Wauwatosa.

The Hilltoppers struck first when Ryan Mahn broke loose for a 60-yard touchdown run in the first quarter. Brookfield East responded with a 70-yard run by Lucas Yttre, who later connected with Sean Neylon for a 29-yard touchdown pass to tie the game.

The Spartans created another opportunity when defensive back Dominic Marks intercepted a deep Marquette pass.

Brookfield East continued to make big plays, including an 87-yard touchdown pass to Beau Evans early in the third quarter.

Marquette answered with a 70-yard touchdown run from Bear Bonk to cut into the deficit. The Hilltoppers also had a field-goal attempt blocked during the game.

Bonk scored again on a rushing touchdown as Marquette continued to battle back. Ben Schroeder then scored on a 1-yard rushing touchdown, with Bonk adding the 2-point conversion as the Hilltoppers continued to pull away.

Caleb Miller intercepted a Brookfield East pass in the third quarter, with Marquette taking control in the second half and pulling away late to finish with the victory.

Schroeder passed for 301 yards and three touchdowns for Marquette. Bonk rushed for 273 yards on 42 carries. Mahn had nine catches for 146 yards.

Yttre passed for 259 yards and three touchdowns for Brookfield East. Evans caught five passes for 169 yards and two TDs.

Marquette is 4-2 overall and 3-1 in the Greater Metro Conference. Brookfield East is 2-4 overall and 1-3 in the conference.
