Chiefs WR Talks Clutch Tyreek Hill 'Wasp' Route to Beat Colts, 'You Can See That Thing on Madden'

During the Kansas City Chiefs' 33-30 overtime win against the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday Night Football, head coach Andy Reid dialed up a familiar play made famous by one of the team's former stars.

With the Chiefs facing third-and-12 in overtime, star quarterback Patrick Mahomes found receiver Tyquan Thornton for a 30-yard reception. After the game, Thornton admitted that he ran the same "Wasp" route that former Kansas City wideout Tyreek Hill ran in the team's Super Bowl LIV victory against the San Francisco 49ers.

"Yeah, it's 'Wasp.' You can see it. Go look on Madden," Thornton told The Athletic's Jesse Newell with a grin. "You can see that thing on Madden, for sure."

The "Wasp" route will live forever in Chiefs history after Hill got open for a 44-yard gain on a third-and-15 play in the fourth quarter to help the team secure a 31-20 comeback win over the 49ers. Thornton ran the play to perfection and held onto the catch despite taking a big hit from Colts safety Hunter Wohler.

"I feel like it hurts less once you make the play," Thornton said. "If you don't make the play, then you know it's gonna hurt even more."

Thornton finished with four catches for 86 yards in the victory, and he also had a key third-down conversion in regulation that pleased Reid.

"Those were two tough catches with people all over him," Reid said. "He did that for us last year at times, and here he steps up. Those are big plays."

Thornton and the Chiefs (2-0) will try to keep the momentum going when they face the Miami Dolphins (0-2) in Week 3.
