The Chicago Bears ' season took a dramatic and dark turn in Week 2.

Following a 59-point outing in Week 1, the Bears came crashing down in their Week 2 loss, 9-3 to the Vikings , as QB Caleb Williams suffered a non-contact right hamstring injury in the fourth quarter .

Williams, who had struggled most of the day, started to run on a first-and-goal play but went down without being touched and later was carted off the field.

Bears head coach Ben Johnson said after the game that Williams was in "good spirits" and was happy that Williams' injury was not his knee, but that the team wouldn't know the severity of it until further tests on Monday.

"Yeah, the hamstring could be pretty damaging as well, so we'll see," Johnson said. "We'll see how bad it is [Monday], but it's quickly you've got to turn the page — particularly when you're right there [near the end zone]. We needed the points pretty desperately at that point, and you know, it's a shame."

Tyson Bagent replaced Williams and couldn't convert on second or third down. Cairo Santos ' game-tying 23-yard field-goal attempt was then blocked. The Vikings drained more than five minutes of clock and tacked on the extra cushion with Will Reichard 's third field goal of the game.

Last week, the Bears and Vikings combined for 98 points. This weekend on a rainy, sloppy Soldier Field: four field goals.

"In between the trenches, I thought our guys answered the bell against a team we knew that wanted to run it," Vikings head coach Kevin O'Connell said.

The Vikings are now 2-0, led by their ferocious defense. Minnesota blitzed Williams relentlessly early and often, creating havoc for the Bears. The Vikings had four sacks, including two from Dallas Turner .

The final play of the game was a beaut from Turner:

Carson Wentz stepped in to start for an injured Kyler Murray , playing turnover-free ball and delivering just enough big connections to secure the victory. The Vikings also received good production from Aaron Jones , who ran for 105 yards despite leaving the game with injury.

The Bears, who fell to 1-1, had their chances. Bagent led the Bears down on their last-gasp drive, but he was sacked on fourth down on the final play of the game by Turner, a fitting end in a dominant defensive showing from Minnesota and coordinator Brian Flores.

Williams finished the game 15-of-26 passing for 138 yards and an interception, also rushing for 42 yards on five runs. Bagent finished 5-of-9 passing for 54 yards.

Seven of the Bears' eight penalties were on offense, as center Garrett Bradbury was guilty of three of them (plus a fourth that offset a Vikings roughing-the-passer call). The Bears were guilty of three straight penalties, and four in a five-play span, that knocked them out of field-goal range and led to a punt late in the second quarter.

It was that kind of day for Chicago offensively. The Bears outgained the Vikings, 297 yards to 246, but couldn't convert on their scoring chances well enough.
