NFL Reportedly to Continue 'Strict' Enforcement of Sportsmanship-Related Rules in 2026

Last year, the NFL announced that it would be cracking down on "unsportsmanlike" and "inappropriate" gestures.

This year, the league's "strict enforcement of sportsmanship-related rules" will continue, according to Mark Maske of Front Office Sports.

"The NFL will continue to stress strict enforcement of its sportsmanship-related rules by its on-field officials this season," Maske wrote.

"That means the officials will be expected to keep a close eye on players violating the league's rules prohibiting taunting opponents, illegal celebrations and fighting, at the behest of the NFL's competition committee."

The NFL announced its emphasis on sportsmanship last August, with NFL officiating rules analyst Walt Anderson saying :

"Unsportsmanlike gestures like simulating or either shooting a gun or brandishing a gun, or inappropriate gestures like a throat slash, or unfortunate sexual gestures, those were up 133% so that is a point of emphasis," Anderson said.

"The officials have made it a point of emphasis to the clubs. It's just one of those areas that the league wants to work actively on. There are plenty of ways for players to be able to celebrate, and they come up with some very unique and often entertaining ways so we want them to focus on those and not the inappropriate areas."

NFL Executive Vice President of Football Operations Troy Vincent had this to say in a video sent to teams last April:

"There's no place in the game to be standing over your opponent," Vincent said. "There's no place in the game to have violent gestures. That's not the game of football. We just have to play by the rules, respect your opponent, respect your teammates and play the game in between the whistles."

The NFL's crackdown on gestures happened after a 2024 season where numerous players were getting fined for various celebrations, including Atlanta Falcons wide receiver Drake London , Kansas City Chiefs wideout Xavier Worthy , Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes , Detroit Lions receiver Jameson Williams , New York Jets wide receiver Allen Lazard and more.

All told, there were 31 fines for obscene gestures totaling $364,327, per Spotrac . Those numbers went down a bit in 2025 (30 fines, $327,249).

It's clear the NFL is still on the lookout for such acts, as evidenced by Maske's report, so chances are we'll be seeing more fines in the future.
