Kyle Shanahan: Mike Evans' injury was Achilles soreness that won't require more testing

Mike Evans came up slowly after making a huge grab just before halftime on Monday night.

The San Francisco 49ers lost star wide receiver Mike Evans early on Monday night due to Achilles soreness, head coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters postgame .

Evans, just before halftime of the Niners' 23-17 win over the Washington Commanders , caught a 16-yard pass from Brock Purdy to convert a first down and put the 49ers into scoring position. Evans dove to make the grab.

Evans was clearly shaken up after the catch. He was slow to walk off the field, and he was spotted stretching out his leg in the tunnel at Levi's Stadium.

Evans had been dealing with an Achilles injury, and was questionable entering the contest with that and a rib injury.

Shanahan said he didn't believe the injury will require further testing.

Evans had three catches for 94 yards before he went down. The team ruled Evans out just after halftime.

The injury was the second significant one to impact a wide receiver on Monday night. Commanders star Terry McLaurin was carted off the field in the first quarter after his left knee buckled. He was in a full air cast, and the team quickly ruled him out with a knee injury.

The 49ers took a 20-3 lead at halftime. Christian McCaffrey scored both of their touchdowns, including a 1-yard run just a few plays after Evans left the contest.

Evans is in his first season with the 49ers. He spent his first 12 seasons in the league with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and he racked up 11 consecutive 1,000-yard seasons before that streak was cut shot last year due to various injuries. He signed a three-year deal with the 49ers this past offseason, and entered Monday's contest with 326 receiving yards and three touchdowns through five games.

Though Washington rallied in the second half, and had a look to grab the win down the stretch, the 49ers held on to take the six-point win . That pushed them to 6-0, which is the best record in the league. Only two other teams, the Minnesota Vikings (5-0) and Kansas City Chiefs (5-0), are also still undefeated. The Commanders fell to 1-4-1.

While the 49ers still haven't lost, losing Evans for any substantial amount of time will be a significant hit to their offense. The way they slowed down in the second half on Monday night was a perfect example of that.
