Bills Re-Sod New Highmark Stadium Grass After NFL Player Calls Field 'Ass'

The Buffalo Bills are re-sodding the grass field at the new Highmark Stadium before Week 1 of the 2026 season, according to Lance Lysowski of the Buffalo News .

The update comes after the original field conditions drew criticism, with one anonymous Bills player previously telling Tim Graham of The Athletic that "the field is ass right now."

Buffalo is using the new $2.2 billion stadium for the first time during its 2026 campaign after three years of construction.

The field contains Kentucky bluegrass grown at Tuckahoe Turf Farms in New Jersey (h/t Graham). Tuckahoe Turf Farms has also handled other NFL stadiums, including the Pittsburgh Steelers' Acrisure Stadium and the Philadelphia Eagles' Lincoln Financial Field.

While an official needed to stop the play clock to replace a divot on the field during the Bills' preseason opener, team president Pete Guelli didn't seem to have long-term concerns regarding the grass after the game.

"From a playability and safety perspective, everybody's very happy," Guelli said, per the Associated Press' John Wawrow . "It's Year 1. So it's a brand new field and it's going to take time for the foundation to build up. So some of the things people saw in the game, those will dissipate over time."

The Bills used artificial turf at their old Highmark Stadium, but switched to natural grass for their new home. It's worth noting that the NFL Players Association revealed on June 10 that 92 percent of NFL players prefer playing on natural grass over turf.

While the Bills will be on the road for a Week 1 matchup with the Houston Texans, their next three games of the 2026 season are set to take place at home.
