Tua, Kyle Pitts' Final Box Score Stats and Highlights from Falcons vs. Dolphins

Tua Tagovailoa saw mixed results as he continued competing for his next QB1 job in his final preseason start for the Atlanta Falcons.

Tagovailoa, who is battling with Michael Penix Jr. to start Week 1 for the Falcons, played the opening quarter Friday night against some of his former teammates on the Miami Dolphins.

He fumbled a snap but also led the Falcons on a touchdown drive highlighted by a run from tight end Kyle Pitts.

After the game, Falcons head coach Kevin Stefanski noted that Tagovailoa moves well but has some things to clean up:

Tagovailoa started out the game by leading the Falcons on a starting offensive drive highlighted by Pitts' 37-yard gain.

Tagovailoa's second drive ended in a fumble after a botched quarterback-center exchange with Corey Levin.

The quarterback had also fumbled a snap in his preseason opener Aug. 14 against the Denver Broncos.

Tagovailoa got the Falcons to the Dolphins' 18-yard line before his third drive of the game ended with a fumble from Brian Robinson Jr.

Falcons coach Kevin Stefanski said ahead of Friday's preseason action he wasn't yet ready to officially give the starting job to either Tagovailoa or Penix.

Tagovailoa's chances of winning the job could depend in part on the health of Penix, who recently returned to 11-on-11 drills for the first time since undergoing knee surgery.

After setting a career high with 88 catches last season, Pitts could potentially see his usage increase in 2026 regardless of which quarterback gets the nod when the Falcons open the regular season Sept. 13 at the Pittsburgh Steelers.
