The NFL will not fine Pittsburgh Steelers offensive guard Mason McCormick for slamming Cleveland Browns defensive end Jared Verse to the turf in Week 8.
McCormick grabbed Verse mid-air and forcefully threw him to the ground following an extra-point attempt during the Steelers' 27-6 victory. The play resulted in a 15-yard penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct.
Verse voiced his displeasure with McCormick — and with his teammates for not defending him — after the game, but it evidently wasn't enough to sway the league.
Verse made strong comments about the Steelers ahead of the game. The 26-year-old said he wasn't "worried about their [offensive] line" and that the Browns planned on making "Pittsburgh ours."
The NFL levied 31 fines in Week 8 , the second-highest total for any week this season. Among those was McCormick's teammate, Steelers safety Jaquan Brisker, who was hit with a $17,911 fine for a hit to the head on Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson. Three Browns players — Tyson Campbell, Quinshon Judkins and Sam Williams — each received fines for either unsportsmanlike conduct or unnecessary roughness.
The Browns entered the game atop the AFC North due to tiebreakers, but the loss dropped them to third in the division. The Steelers moved into first with a 6-2 record after avenging their 27-24 loss against Cleveland in Week 4.
