“He’s been helping us a lot”: How Travis Kelce became more than a football hero to two Kansas City brothers through a bond built on trust

Travis Kelce has built his name with the Kansas City Chiefs, but his connection with two young brothers in Kansas City grew away from the football field. His friendship with Amare and Amir Kane began at Operation Breakthrough around 2016. Over the years, their bond grew through visits, football camps and conversations that gave the boys a personal connection with one of the NFL's biggest stars. What started as a meeting at the Kansas City nonprofit soon turned into a lasting friendship, with Kelce taking a personal interest in the brothers’ lives, interests and future beyond football.Travis Kelce became more than a Chiefs star to the Kane brothersKelce met Amare and Amir at Operation Breakthrough, a Kansas City nonprofit that provides educational and social support to children and families. The brothers had faced a painful loss after their older sister, Alexis, was murdered in January 2015 at age 14. The centre supported the family, and Kelce gradually became another encouraging presence in the boys' lives. The Chiefs tight end saw something special in the brothers. As per The Athletic report, Kelce said, “Those guys will light up the room every single time they walk in it, man. They just love life.”The brothers felt the connection, too. Amir credited Operation Breakthrough with introducing them to Kelce. In the same report, he said, “He’s been helping us a lot, helping us stay active and to keep trying our best.”Kelce made an effort to build a genuine relationship with the boys instead of limiting his involvement to charity events. In 2017, he invited them to his Walk the Walk charity fashion show, which raised money for Operation Breakthrough. The brothers copied his touchdown dance on the runway. On July 14, 2018, they also attended Kelce's football camp. Later, he took students from the centre to Dick's Sporting Goods and gave each one a $150 gift card. Amir chose a red No. 87 Kelce T-shirt.These moments gave the brothers memories with a player they admired. But Kelce's support also extended to the opportunities they could pursue beyond sports.Travis Kelce support helped open doors to education and technologyIn September 2018, Kelce donated $45,000 to establish a robotics lab at Operation Breakthrough. The facility gave children access to technology and engineering activities they might not otherwise have experienced. He returned for a robotics tournament in late 2019, where students raced their machines on a miniature football field. Rather than simply attending as a celebrity guest, Kelce joined the activity and learned about the projects.Amare developed interests in robotics, coding, music production and cooking, while Amir gravitated toward engineering and construction. Their interests also highlighted the importance of giving older students somewhere to continue learning. That idea helped lead to the Ignition Lab. In 2020, Kelce purchased a former auto repair shop across the street from Operation Breakthrough and planned to turn it into a practical learning space for teenagers. The project offered a path into areas such as coding, technology and multimedia production.Kelce's support became especially important when the COVID-19 pandemic hit in March 2020. According to The Athletic report, he contacted Operation Breakthrough's leadership to ask what the centre needed. When staff requested food support for eight weeks, his contribution covered 15 weeks.Amare and Amir's relationship grew through consistent involvement, not just financial support. It did not establish what happened to the brothers in the years afterward. Still, their story offered a personal view of Kelce's work in Kansas City: he made time for the children, encouraged their interests and helped create opportunities beyond football.Get the latest Sports News and Live updates.
