Cam Ward’s difficult afternoon against the Giants did not end when the final whistle sounded. The Tennessee Titans suffered a 12-7 loss at MetLife Stadium yesterday. Ward’s sister, Chantel, took to social media to address what she described as a wave of harassment directed at her and other members of their family.Chantel said people had been entering her direct messages on Facebook, X and Instagram following Titans games and sending what she characterized as threats, hate, bullying, personal attacks, and disrespect. Her message came shortly after Ward threw a costly interception in the final seconds of Tennessee's latest loss.Cam Ward’s sister: “The fact I even have to post this is diabolical”Chantel began her statement by expressing frustration that she felt the situation had become serious enough to address publicly.“The fact I even have to post this is diabolical,”she wrote in an Instagram Story, according to reports.She explained that fans see everything that happens during an NFL game, whether it’s a touchdown, interceptions, wins, losses, or press conferences, but don't necessarily see what happens to the people closest to players once the game is over.According to Chantel, that has meant people taking their frustration with Cam directly to her social-media accounts.She said the messages included “threats, hate, bullying, personal attacks and disrespect”toward her and her family.Chantel also claimed that the screenshots she had shared publicly represented only a fraction of the messages she had received.Chantel made it clear that she understands criticism comes with being an NFL quarterback.She said fans are entitled to criticize a player's performance and decisions on the field. But she drew a line between football criticism and personally targeting a player's relatives. Her argument was that Cam Ward is a quarterback to the fans watching on Sundays, but he is her younger brother away from the football field.That distinction formed the heart of her message.Chantel said she has “loved, protected, supported” Cam and watched him work toward his football career throughout his life. She argued that threats and harassment directed at a player's family should not be treated as simply another part of being a professional athlete.Cam Ward’s final throw sent Titans fans into frustrationChantel's statement came after one of the most painful endings possible for Tennessee. The Titans trailed the Giants for most of the afternoon but managed to put together a late comeback attempt. Ward helped Tennessee cut the deficit to five points with a fourth-quarter touchdown pass to Wan'Dale Robinson. The Titans then got the ball back and drove deep into Giants territory, setting up a chance to potentially win the game. But the comeback ended at the worst possible moment.With Tennessee inside the Giants' 10-yard line, Ward rolled to his left and had an opportunity to run or potentially use one of the Titans' remaining timeouts. Instead, he attempted to throw toward the end zone.Giants safety Jevon Holland jumped the pass and intercepted it, sealing New York's 12-7 victory. The Titans officially finished the game 0-for-3 in the red zone. Ward finished the game 23-of-36 for 181 yards, one touchdown and one interception.The quarterback later acknowledged that he would have liked to make a better throw.“At the end of the day, if I throw it higher, it’s a different outcome,” Ward said after the game. He added that he did not believe the decision was reckless but acknowledged that it simply wasn't a good throw.Titans coach Robert Saleh also addressed the interceptionWard's final decision also drew criticism from Titans head coach Robert Saleh. Saleh pointed out that Ward had room to run and said the quarterback needed to be more careful with the football in that situation.“We’ve got two timeouts left, it’s first and goal,”Saleh said. “We’re gonna score, you don’t need to force it in that situation.”That criticism is separate from the online harassment Chantel described.
