Vikings QB Kyler Murray ruled out for Week 2 matchup vs. Bears while in concussion protocol

The Minnesota Vikings will be without Kyler Murray in Week 2, with the starting quarterback officially ruled out of Sunday's matchup against the Chicago Bears due to a concussion.

Murray suffered the injury on Sunday after taking a scary hit in the Vikings ' win over the Green Bay Packers . He was placed in concussion protocol on Monday.

In a news conference on Friday, Minnesota head coach Kevin O'Connell said that Murray had "shown a lot of progress," and that they "fully anticipate him clearing the protocol early next week."

Per the team's injury report, Murray has been limited in practice this week. O'Connell told reporters on Monday that Murray was able to participate in team meetings despite the head injury, and said that they'll "just take it a day at a time."

With Murray out, Carson Wentz will again step up as the team's QB1. Wentz went on to rally Minnesota to victory over the Packers to open the season, thanks in part to some late misfires from Green Bay . J.J. McCarthy will be the backup quarterback, per O'Connell.

Murray, who signed a one-year deal with the Vikings after being released by the Arizona Cardinals in March, started his Minnesota career on a poor note with a bad interception on his first passing attempt of Sunday's game. But later in the first quarter, Murray took a big hit from two Packers defenders that ended with his helmet flying off his head.

Murray stayed down for a while before walking off the field and into the locker room. Javon Bullard , whose forceful blow knocked off Murray's helmet, was flagged for a personal foul (unnecessary roughness).

On Monday, O'Connell said that there was no one to blame for the hit on Murray.

"It would be one thing if there was a headfirst slide and a clear declaration [of giving himself up]," O'Connell said, via ESPN . "But I don't put any fault on anybody there."

In addition to Murray being out, the Vikings also announced that wide receiver Jauan Jennings would be out due to a non-injury reason. O'Connell told reporters on Friday that Jennings was dealing with a "personal family matter."
