Terry Bradshaw and Tammy’s ER meeting led to romance, but one first-date detail made her hesitate to call him back

Terry Bradshaw was not looking for a new relationship when he met Tammy in a Texas hospital in 2003. The former Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback had been through three divorces and was trying to focus on his mental health. Then an injured horse trainer brought him to Baylor Scott & White Medical Center in Grapevine, where Tammy was working in radiology. Their first meeting sparked an immediate attraction, but dating a famous NFL figure was another matter. Even after a successful first date, Tammy questioned whether she was ready for the life that came with him.Terry Bradshaw’s hospital encounter with Tammy led to an unexpected first dateBradshaw, now 78, accompanied a horse trainer from his ranch to the hospital for an X-ray after the trainer broke an ankle. That was where he first saw Tammy, then a radiology manager and educator.“They had to X-ray [the trainer’s broken ankle],” he recounts to PEOPLE from the kitchen table at the couple’s horse breeding ranch in Saint Jo, Texas, last month. “And through the doors comes blondie. I went, ‘Oh my God, is she ever more gorgeous?’ I automatically said, ‘Oh, wow.’ “Bradshaw tried to strike up a conversation while Tammy focused on her work. She remembers the exchange with humor, saying, “I’m just trying to do my job.”Still, the attraction was not one-sided. Tammy recalls making eye contact with the former quarterback and being struck by his eyes. “He looked at me and we made eye contact. And it’s just like in a movie, the thought that went through my brain was, ‘This man has the bluest eyes I’ve ever seen in my life. I can see all the way to his soul,’ “ she says.Tammy initially thought little more of the encounter than a memorable meeting with a local celebrity. That changed when Bradshaw left her a voicemail she described as the “most unassuming, sweet voicemail.” He had obtained her number through an acquaintance who worked at the hospital.She was nervous about accepting his invitation because of his fame, but the first date went well. “I had such a good time with him and I could tell he was a good person.”Tammy’s hesitation came as Terry Bradshaw faced doubts about marriageA good first date did not settle Tammy’s concerns. Bradshaw kept calling, but she often let the phone ring. The question was whether she felt ready to enter a relationship with someone whose life was so different from hers.“He kept calling and I kept not answering the phone. I was going, ‘Can I do this?’ ... He’s in a whole different world. ‘Am I confident enough to even think about entering this situation?’ “ she says.Her daughter, Lacey Hester, now 37, encouraged her to give the relationship a chance. Tammy and Bradshaw went on to date for more than a decade before marrying in 2014. They renewed their vows in 2021.Their long courtship was not without setbacks. Bradshaw continued to struggle with fears linked to his previous marriages and divorces. At times, he pulled away, once ending the relationship through an email. The separation lasted months.“I would get scared,” he admits. “I didn’t trust myself, honestly.”Tammy said she understood that Bradshaw, who lives with clinical depression, was working to find the right treatment plan, including medication. She chose not to pressure him into making decisions before he was ready.“I learned to stand still and he would always come back,” she says.Looking back, Bradshaw believes those personal struggles ultimately brought them together. “Personal struggles is what got me to her,” he reflects. “If it hadn’t been for this, it couldn’t have been that.”The couple now speak openly about how fortunate they feel to have found each other. Tammy also appreciates that Bradshaw can publicly express his love for her, a gesture she says she rarely gets to return in the same way.
