New NFL Rumors on Justin Herbert Trade Offers, Chargers' Stance on Khalil Mack, Ladd McConkey Deals
Despite the NFL's lone remaining winless team, the Los Angeles Chargers appear like they will be very silent through the trade deadline on Tuesday.
Despite the NFL's lone remaining winless team, the Los Angeles Chargers appear like they will be very silent through the trade deadline on Tuesday.
Per ESPN's Adam Schefter and NFL Network's Ian Rapoport , the Chargers have given "hard nos" to opposing general managers who have tried to inquire about Justin Herbert and Ladd McConkey, among others.
The report also noted the Chargers are prioritizing keeping Khalil Mack because of how much they value his leadership and talent.
Jonathan Jones of The Athletic added the Chargers have "signaled to everyone" they don't intend to trade away anyone:
"It has confounded rival teams who wish to peck at the Chargers' carcass before Tuesday. And in searching for a reason, a few executives I spoke with pointed to the head coach specifically.
"Jim Harbaugh is always good for a quote. He has said he remembers the weather on the day he was born. He thinks Justin Herbert is one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time, someone he would follow to hell and back."
Mack is the one from that group who ticks many boxes if you were looking who could get traded. He's a 35-year-old signed to a one-year contract, making him appear like a perfect candidate to be moved.
It would make little sense for the Chargers to trade either Herbert or McConkey unless they just wanted to tear everything down because both players would presumably bring back a significant return.
The Chargers have been the biggest disappointment in the NFL this season. Preseason optimism was extremely high coming off playoff appearances in head coach Jim Harbaugh's first two years, then the addition of Mike McDaniel at offensive coordinator was praised as one of the best offseason moves for any team.
Seven games into the regular season, the Chargers are 0-7 and rank last in points per game. Herbert's interception rate of 4.7 percent is more than double his career mark of 1.9 percent.
Even with all of their flaws right now, it's not hard to talk yourself into the Chargers rebounding in 2027 with a few changes to the coaching staff and roster.
Herbert has never been anywhere close to this bad before, so there's nowhere for him to go but up. McConkey is averaging a career-high 16.8 yards per reception.
They are currently in position to have the No. 1 pick in the 2027 NFL draft in a class with multiple quarterbacks who will be worth that selection. The Chargers could get a huge haul in a trade to add multiple impact players around Herbert and McConkey, so neither one needs to be moved.
It's unclear how Mack fits into the 2027 equation for the Chargers given his age and contract status, but it seems like they would need a dramatic change of heart late in the process to move him before 4 p.m. ET on Tuesday.
