Drake Maye, Patriots on Wrong Side of NFL History with Ultra Rare Stat in Loss to Lock, Seahawks

The New England Patriots earned a dubious distinction in their 13-10 road loss to the Seattle Seahawks to open the 2026 NFL regular season on Wednesday night.

According to OptaSTATS , the Pats became the first NFL team in the past 30 years to throw three or more interceptions, take three or more sacks, commit three or more penalties and score no points in a single quarter:

New England entered the fourth quarter with a 10-3 lead and seemed to be in firm control, as Seahawks starting quarterback Sam Darnold left the game after the opening offensive series of the contest due to a hip injury and was replaced by Drew Lock.

Despite that, Seattle mounted a comeback, tying the game in the fourth quarter on a 45-yard touchdown pass from Lock to Jaxon Smith-Njigba, and then taking the lead on a Jason Myers field goal with 5:50 remaining.

Both of the Seahawks' scores in the fourth quarter came on the back of interceptions thrown by Patriots quarterback Drake Maye, but Maye had a chance to redeem himself on New England's final drive.

Maye got the Pats as close as Seattle's 16-yard line, but disaster struck for New England on a third-and-5, as Maye was flushed from the pocket and made an ill-advised throw.

Rather than throwing the ball away, taking the field goal and likely going to overtime, Maye attempted to hit Mack Hollins in the end zone, only for Seahawks cornerback Josh Jobe to reel in the game-winning interception.

That marked Maye's third interception of the game and the quarter, and it ended the season opener in heartbreaking fashion for the Patriots.

Much like during the Patriots' 29-13 loss to the Seahawks in the Super Bowl last season, New England struggled mightily on offense on Wednesday, creating at least some concern regarding how they will handle the stout defenses of the Pittsburgh Steelers and Jacksonville Jaguars the next two weeks.

Perhaps even more concerning is the status of Patriots star wide receiver AJ Brown, who went down with an ankle injury in the third quarter and did not return.
