Golden State Valkyries set ‘Super Bowl era’ record with historic WNBA championship win

The Golden State Valkyries have done something no other American sports franchise has managed after winning their first WNBA championship.

Across professional sports in the US, expansion teams are often looked at as franchises who need time to become a serious force in their leagues. Many teams who have been added late have failed to make noticeable impacts for decades. The Golden State Valkyries have shown they do not have to be like that..

After beating the Atlanta Dream 68-63 in Game 7 of the WNBA Finals on Saturday night, the Valkyries secured their first-ever championship. Considering that this is only the second year they have existed as a team, they have officially set a mark no team has managed in the 'Super Bowl era' of professional sports in the United States.

Golden State Valkyries become the first team to win in just their second year as a franchise

In 2025, when the Valkyries joined the WNBA, they acquired most of their roster through the expansion draft. This included players like Veronica Burton and Kayla Thornton. They weren't satisfied with just what they had despite making the playoffs, adding Gabby Williams and Kiah Stokes in 2026.

Their moves and head coach Natalie Nakase's basketball savvy have resulted in the Valkyries franchise achieving something no other team has managed.

"Golden State becomes the fastest expansion team in American pro sports history (Super Bowl era) to win a title," Underdog reported. The closest any team has been to this record is the 1970-71 Milwaukee Bucks, who won in their third season. So the Valkyries have made outright history.

It is hard to imagine any team beating this record anytime soon. The way the WNBA is growing, any new contenders for it are likely to arrive within that league itself. For now, Golden State stands alone and they deserve all the flowers for their incredible achievement.
