Cam Skattebo is coming off a brutal injury during his rookie season, but the New York Giants running back is ready to take on a major workload this season.
Skattebo said that Giants head coach John Harbaugh asked if he's willing to take 20-plus carries a game, and he said he feels ready for it.
"I had a couple talks with him letting him know, hey, I'm gonna be ready to go. And he trusted me, and he trusted the fact that I'm ready to go," Skattebo said on Sports Seriously (3:00 mark). "He got a little snippet of it in our first preseason game, and he's gonna get a big snippet on Sunday Night Football. So I'm excited to show him what I have, and we talk a lot, but when he walks up to me and tells me, 'Are you ready for 20-plus carries a game?' I think I'm in a pretty good spot."
Skattebo's rookie season ended in Week 8 when he suffered a dislocated ankle, fractured fibula and a ruptured deltoid ligament against the Philadelphia Eagles. He had put together a solid season up to that point, recording 405 rushing yards, 207 receiving yards and seven total touchdowns.
His recovery from the injury wasn't easy, and he even said he considered retiring in the weeks after.
"Yeah, definitely," Skattebo said on Up & Adams . "I would say probably a month in, like the first month, I was like, 'Damn, do I really wanna do this?' And then, it was seven games. I was like, 'I gotta go back and play.' There's no shot. If it was the end of the year and I was like, 'Okay, I'm over this.' I didn't feel that way at all. ... I think that gave me an extra step of finding that deep place and coming out of a hole that I didn't know I could come out of."
Luckily for Giants fans, Skattebo stuck with his recovery and will be back for another year. Based on his recent comments, it sounds like he could be in for a big second season.
Skattebo will be competing with Tyrone Tracy Jr., Najee Harris and Devin Singletary for touches, but if Harbaugh asked him to take 20 touches per game, it seems he'll be a focal point of the offense.
That, of course, has fantasy implications. Skattebo likely won't be anyone's first running back selection, but if Harbaugh plans to use him often, he could be a reliable second option or a flex option.
Skattebo also excels through the air, making him a great choice for PPR leagues.
