Baker Mayfield dons Michigan tank top to pay off bet with Todd Bowles following Wolverines' win over Oklahoma

Baker Mayfield did not have the best of weekends.

On Sunday, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers opened the NFL season with a 33-27 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals . Mayfield threw for 216 yards, but was sacked four times, had three fumbles and did not throw a touchdown pass.

A day before the Buccaneers' first game, Mayfield's Oklahoma lost to Michigan 17-10 . That defeat meant the quarterback had to pay up on a bet between himself and his head coach, Todd Bowles, whose son Troy is a senior linebacker and recorded nine total tackles against the Sooners.

For his weekly meeting with the media on Wednesday, Mayfield walked up to the podium wearing a No. 18 Michigan tank top (Troy Bowles' number) with his head coach singing the Wolverines' fight song.

"That hurts, that hurts real bad," Mayfield said. "It's been a rough couple of days."

When asked if Buccaneers guard Ben Bredeson , who also went to Michigan, bought the tank top for him, Mayfield said, "No, he's probably got something worse."

We'll see if Bredeson and Mayfield had a bet of their own. If not, wearing a tank top of rival colors isn't so bad.

Fortunately for Mayfield, Michigan does not have a sideline mascot, otherwise we could have had another Tyquan Lewis-DeForest Buckner situation when Lewis had to don an Oregon mascot costume after Buckner's Ducks beat Ohio State in 2024.
