Cowboys vs. Ravens NFL Brazil Game Will Be Held at Maracana Stadium Despite Complaints About Field

Recent complaints about the field at Maracanã Stadium in Rio de Janeiro have led to questions about whether the Dallas Cowboys and Baltimore Ravens should play there in Week 3, but the NFL has no plans to change the venue.

Per Front Office Sports' Mark Maske , the NFL plans to move forward with Maracanã Stadium and "has a plan in place to ensure a high-quality playing surface."

Questions arose about the field at Maracanã Stadium in recent days after soccer players voiced their concerns about it.

"You don't even need to talk about the field. It's there for everyone to see," Flamengo goalkeeper Agustín Rossi said, according to ge, a Brazilian sports media site (h/t Jonas Shaffer of the Baltimore Banner) . "The way we play, it's unbelievable that we're playing on a field like this. Both penalty areas are bad as [expletive]. If you look at it, there are bumps everywhere. There's still going to be an NFL game here during the international break. After that game, I hope the field is in better shape."

It's not unheard of for the NFL to move international games to the regular NFL venues on short notice.

In 2018, a game between the Kansas City Chiefs and Los Angeles Rams was moved from Mexico City to the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum because of the field conditions at Estadio Azteca. The change was made less than a week before the game.

Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer said after Sunday's win over the Washington Commanders that the team has "no concerns" about the field conditions, while owner Jerry Jones said they will monitor the situation.

"We'll look at that and I know it's the utmost concern to the league and the teams playing down there," Jones said, per the Dallas Morning News . We'll obviously stay informed as we look to it and it's front of mind now that we've gotten past the Washington Commanders."

While bringing NFL games to international venues has been a priority of NFL commissioner Roger Goodell in recent years, the health and safety of players will surely be the biggest concern.

For now, though, it seems the game will continue as originally scheduled.
