Chiefs Beat Broncos, Box Score Stats, Highlights for Mahomes, Walker, Kelce, Nix, Waddle, More

After missing the playoffs last season for the first time since the 2014 campaign, Kansas City bounced back in style during its 2026 opener with a commanding 31-10 victory over the rival Denver Broncos on Monday at Arrowhead Stadium.

Offseason addition Kenneth Walker III was brilliant, while Patrick Mahomes worked through some rust with multiple touchdown passes. The Chiefs defense also overwhelmed Bo Nix and kept the Denver offense in check for the majority of the contest.

The biggest storyline coming into this game was the return of the quarterbacks. It was Mahomes' first game back from the torn ACL and LCL that cut his 2025 campaign short, while Nix was back in the lineup after he missed the AFC Championship Game due to a fractured ankle.

Naturally, they were front and center right from the start for different reasons.

Nix threw an interception to Mansoor Delane on Denver's first possession, and the Chiefs took advantage on the ensuing drive when Mahomes broke free for a 15-yard rushing touchdown. His ability to dial up the speed in the open field seemed to answer any questions about whether he was physically ready, although he struggled with accuracy at times in the first half.

He struggled with accuracy, that is, until he found Rashee Rice for a touchdown pass right before intermission to answer Nix's touchdown pass to Evan Engram. The strike to Rice was a break from the Chiefs offense for the majority of the half, which was largely reliant on Walker.

But it was just a temporary break, as the home team continued to ride Walker to start the second half when he exploded to the outside and outran the entire Denver defense for a 60-yard touchdown to open up a two-score lead.

Walker's run was the biggest play of a second half largely defined by the Broncos' inability to get out of their own way.

When the visitors had an opportunity to climb right back in the game after Brandon Jones returned an interception of Mahomes to the Chiefs' 5-yard line, they had to settle for a field goal after a holding. When their defense held Kansas City to just a field goal after Travis Kelce's 59-yard reception moved him up in the history books, Nix lost a fumble.

That fumble recovery by Chris Jones set up yet another Walker touchdown as the new running back continued his dominance.

The Chiefs cruising against a team that was in last season's AFC Championship Game even with Mahomes playing at less than his best felt like a warning to the rest of the conference. With Walker now in the backfield and a strong defense on the other side, another deep playoff run would be anything but surprising.

And they will look to continue building on their early momentum with a Week 2 showdown with the Indianapolis Colts. As for Denver, it will attempt to bounce back against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
