The Washington Commanders are in a familiar situation after losing star quarterback Jayden Daniels to a devastating elbow injury in Sunday's loss to the Dallas Cowboys, and there was no way to sugarcoat the team's disappointment.

"It sucks," head coach Dan Quinn said after the Cowboys' 37-20 win, per The Athletic's David Aldridge .

Daniels dislocated his left elbow when he tried to steady himself after stumbling on the last play of the first half at the Cowboys' goal line. He had to be carted off the field, conjuring familiar memories of his injury-riddled 2025 campaign in which he was limited to just seven games.

"That's the reality of it, that it's happening again," Commanders star receiver Terry McLaurin said. "None of us can really be in denial about it. I don't think it's that all that (offseason) work was for nothing. I think it allowed us to build the camaraderie needed to come into the season and try to build a new offense. I guess the silver lining is we're only in Week 2, going into Week 3. It's a long season. And I know he bounced back last year. Obviously, the season kind of went off the rails, and he was held back. But there's going to be a lot of season for him to be able to come back."

In all, it's the fourth time in his last five games that Daniels has sustained an injury, hindering a once-promising career for the 2024 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year.

"It's one of the worst parts about the sport, the injuries," Commanders center Nick Allegretti said. "Like, the whole training camp situation, when somebody gets hurt. The reality is you move the ball up and keep going. It sucks. I understand the reality of it. But there's all these rules, and you've got to keep going. You can only practice for so much, but you've got to keep going. The game has to go on, everything like that. The injuries are probably the worst part of this game. Seeing the guys that you … we see these guys more than our families during the season. Seeing something like that sucks."

The Commanders (0-2) will turn to veteran backup Marcus Mariota as they try to get back on track in Daniels' absence. Things won't get any easier in Week 3, as Washington will be hosting the defending Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks (2-0).
