Sean Payton comments on NFL-best record in October: ‘I didn’t know that’
Sean Payton is an mid-season maestro
When it comes to September, the Denver Broncos have not been a very good team. When the calendar turns to October, the Broncos and specifically coach Sean Payton have turned up the heat, and played some of their best football of the year.
Payton has an all-time 54-17 in October , good for the best month mark in NFL history, including a perfect month in 2025 with wins over the Philadelphia Eagles , Dallas Cowboys, New York Giants and New York Jets, which turned Denver from 2-2 to 6-2 during that stretch.
"I have no idea (about that stat), Payton said leading into Week 4. "I didn't know that, but I think that the coach in you says, 'Man, why isn't it better in September?' So hopefully we can continue that. Just leaving the team as we called everyone up, it was, 'October was good for us a year ago, and that's because you guys made it a priority during the week.'"
The Broncos in 2026 have a similarly difficult October ahead of them, with the Los Angeles Chargers, San Francisco 49ers, Seattle Seahawks and Arizona Cardinals on deck. After finishing September 2-1, Payton is ready for the challenge ahead.
"We're early in this race," Payton said. "We have to be finding these areas that don't become another mistake Week 5 or Week 6. So I don't recall— you don't remember Octobers specifically, but hopefully we can continue that trend."\
The Broncos look to start October off strong against the 49ers, who they play on Sunday at 2:25 pm MST.
