Ranking the worst losses in an upset-filled Week 7 in the NFL, from Panthers flop to Jets disaster

The Panthers and Jets were among the teams who will regret Sunday's results.

· 797 words

At this point in the NFL season, there has been separation between the contenders who are looking for a playoff spot and the pretenders whose seasons are almost over. That means, though, that upset losses are getting even more devastating.

In Week 7 in particular, several of the league's worst teams gave their opponents all they could in search of a rare win. In some cases, those teams actually pulled off the upset, handing the other team a loss that they will regret for the rest of the year.

Whether it was the Miami Dolphins picking up their first win of the season ot the Carolina Panthers no-showing at home, some of this week's results produced losses that frustrated many fans across the country.

Here's a look at the worst losses from the early window in Week 7.

5. 49ers undefeated season ends in Atlanta

The San Francisco 49ers looked like the best team in the NFL through the first six weeks, but they finally dropped a game against the Atlanta Falcons . Injuries and inconsistencies on Sunday led to the 49ers' struggles in an early kickoff on the road, making it so there is now one less undefeated team.

All things considered, this loss isn't too bad for the 49ers. It was on the road on the East Coast, which in and of itself is not an easy task for West Coast teams, and the Falcons have shown some serious fight after a tough 0-2 start.

Additionally, this loss is not in the division, which should give Atlanta a little bit of solace heading home.

4. Texans falter against Giants QB J.J. McCarthy

The Houston Texans put themselves in a major hole by starting the season 0-4, making every game the rest of the way crucial. While they won the last two games to get back on track, the Texans went one step backwards with a home loss to the New York Giants .

The Giants were starting J.J. McCarthy for the first time this year, presenting the Texans' defense a chance to flex its muscles. Instead, McCarthy had a nice day through the air, outgaining C.J. Stroud with 99 more passing yards.

Houston's defense allowed 400 yards to a Giants offense on its third quarterback this season, while the Texans' offense produced just 237 yards on the day. Overall, it was a humbling loss for a Texans team that now falls to 2-5.

3. Ravens fade vs. Bengals without Lamar

The Baltimore Ravens began Sunday strong as they held the Cincinnati Bengals scoreless in the first half, taking a 13-0 lead into the break. In the second half, though, the Ravens completely fell apart, letting the Bengals score 35 unanswered points as the Bengals won in a blowout.

Losing without Lamar Jackson is not necessarily surprising, but the way the Ravens lost was certainly disconcerting. Baltimore was home against a division rival, in a very competitive division, and now sits alone in last place in the AFC North.

The Ravens are now 0-2 in division games with back-to-back losses to the Browns and Bengals. While Cincinnati is on the upswing following the win, the Ravens need Jackson to hit the ground running when he returns.

2. Jets suffer inexcusable loss to winless Dolphins

It's not often that the New York Jets are the better team in a game, and they were on Sunday against the Miami Dolphins. That didn't matter, though, when the Dolphins got their first win of the season on the road against the Jets.

The loss means head coach Aaron Glenn is now 0-8 against AFC East teams since he took over as Jets head coach, along with a 5-19 record overall. This is the kind of loss that could cost Glenn his job at one point, even if that doesn't happen midseason.

Jets fans had hopes that their team could actually compete for a playoff spot this year. Instead, New York is 2-5 and faces another lost season.

1. Panthers flop in blowout loss against Buccaneers

The Carolina Panthers had a chance to bury their division rival, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and take full control in the NFC South. Instead, the Panthers laid an egg while Baker Mayfield's return to the lineup led to the Buccaneers' second win of the season.

Carolina had hopes this year to take a step forward, with this being the type of game that contenders use to make their mark. However, all three phases of the Panthers failed on Sunday, highlighted by allowing 26 points in the second quarter alone.

Now, the Panthers not only let the Buccaneers back into the division race, but they also ceded space with the Falcons atop the standings. Carolina went from firm control of the division to barely hanging on.
