Jonnu Smith, Packers Reportedly Agree to Contract in NFL Free Agency After Steelers Release

Make it five teams in five seasons for Jonnu Smith.

The Green Bay Packers signed the veteran tight end to a one-year deal on Thursday according to NFL insider Jordan Schultz, after the Pittsburgh Steelers released him in early March.

RB: Josh Jacobs, MarShawn Lloyd, Chris Brooks

Smith, 30, spent the first four seasons of his NFL career with the Tennessee Titans (2017-20) before two years in New England during the 2021-22 campaigns. He was then with the Atlanta Falcons in 2023 before having his best season with the Miami Dolphins in 2024, setting career highs in catches (88), receiving yards (884) and touchdowns (eight) while earning Pro Bowl honors for the first time.

But the Dolphins traded him and Jalen Ramsey to the Steelers ahead of the 2025 season for Minkah Fitzpatrick and a late-round pick swap. He didn't replicate his success in Miami with the Steelers, catching just 38 passes for 222 yards and two touchdowns, as quarterback Aaron Rodgers clearly preferred targets like wideout DK Metcalf, tight end Pat Freiermuth and even running back Kenny Gainwell out of the backfield.

Given Smith's disappointing season and the fact that the Steelers saved $7 million against the cap by cutting him, the news didn't come as a major surprise. But Green Bay will be hoping it can get the version of Smith who thrived with the Dolphins, and if they do, it will be one of the better value signings of the offseason.
