San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan doesn't care that wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk is meeting with the team at its business offices on Friday.

"No clue, your guess is as good as mine," Shanahan said during his Friday press conference when a reporter asked him what was going to happen.

The reporter then asked Shanahan what he would like to see happen, and the coach replied: "Could care less."

Aiyuk Addresses Future at 49ers Facility

Aiyuk's agent, Drew Rosenhaus, told ESPN's Adam Schefter that the team planned to meet with the 49ers at 3 p.m. PT on Friday.

The 49ers placed Aiyuk on the team's reserve/left squad list in Dec. 2025 .

In Oct. 2024 , the former Arizona State star suffered a torn ACL, MCL and meniscus in his right knee during a game against the Kansas City Chiefs, ending his season.

Aiyuk didn't play next year either, and any chance that he would return ended with with the placement on the reserve/left squad list.

Shanahan told reporters why following the 49ers' 37-24 win over the Tennessee Titans.

"We haven't seen him in forever," Shanahan said. "That's the decision they make. It's been pretty simple for me. I haven't seen him in a month. It hasn't been an issue with our team at all. We've been plugging away. No big deal. It's something we've been used to for a while."

Aiyuk's time with the 49ers is up. Shanahan has clearly "moved on," as he indicated earlier this week.

However, he's still under contract with the team after signing a four-year, $120 million contract extension with San Francisco in 2024.

Rosenhaus has turned in paperwork to have Aiyuk reinstated.

But he won't be back with San Francisco, so the question is how the 49ers and Aiyuk can best part ways.

As far as the 49ers' side, general manager John Lynch said the situation was "fluid" on KNBR's Murph & Markus show (h/t Harrison Rich of the San Francisco Chronicle ).

"I'm gonna kind of leave it at that, because I've been recommended to do so, and I think it's the right thing to do," Lynch said.

"We'll look for a pathway for both sides here that works. ... I think everything's possible. I will say this: We've worked with (agent Drew Rosenhaus) a lot. Drew is a good guy to deal with. He's reasonable, he's got integrity. … We'll see how this thing goes. I think I'll just leave it at that."

There also has been (and presumably will be) a lot of money involved here.

In the summer of 2025, the 49ers voided $27 million in guaranteed money for 2026 on Aiyuk's contract because he missed rehab sessions, per ESPN's Nick Wagoner .

However, per Josh Dubow of the Associated Press, the NFL told Aiyuk he owes the team $13 million he has previously received in bonus money:

"A person with knowledge of the situation said the league sent Aiyuk and the NFL Players Association a letter Thursday saying that he owes the 49ers the money based on bonuses he was paid after signing a four-year, $120 million extension just before the start of the 2024 season. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the letter was not released."

Ultimately, Aiyuk's time with San Francisco finally appears to be nearing its end, culminating a long and drawn-out years-long saga.
