Eagles vs. Bears, Live Updates: Jalen Hurts scores last-gasp TD to cut lead before halftime
The Philadelphia Eagles take on the Chicago Bears on Monday night at Soldier Field. Follow for updates from the Week 3 showdown.
CHICAGO — Greetings from the press box at Soldier Field, where the Philadelphia Eagles will battle the Chicago Bears on "Monday Night Football."
Jalen Hurts and the Eagles are 2-0 after wins over the Commanders and Titans to open the season.
The Bears , meanwhile, are 1-1. They hung 59 points on the Panthers in Week 1 but lost to the Vikings, 9-3, in Week 2.
Chicago are without quarterback Caleb Williams , who injured his hamstring last week. And with backup Tyson Bagent coming back from a concussion, the Bears will start 38-year-old third-stringer Case Keenum .
The Eagles have a favorable history against Keenum . We'll see if they can get to the veteran and defend the run better than they did in last year's Black Friday loss to the Bears.
Zach Ertz is back . Jonathan Greenard is set to make his Eagles debut. Plenty to keep an eye on tonight.
Stay here for updates throughout the game from Chicago.
Wow, what a sequence. Jalen Hurts orchestrated an exhilarating two-minute drill to cut the lead before halftime.
The Eagles, curiously, dialed up screen pass with no timeouts to bring it down to the 1-yard line. Hurts looked like he was going to spike it and set up a field goal as time was expiring. Instead, Hurts barely got the snap off and sneaked his way into the end zone as the clock hit zero.
Huge stuff from Hurts. And incredible catch by DeVonta Smith to help set it all up.
The Eagles could be leading this game if not for a few major penalties. They could also be losing by a lot more. Down three and getting the ball to start the second half, they'll take it.
Case Keenum's performance so far really puts the Eagles' shoddy QB2 situation into perspective. The 38-year-old third-stringer is dicing up the Eagles' safeties. This time, completions of 25, 22, 15 and 13 yards guided the Bears on a scoring drive, capped by a 29-yard field goal.
A whole lot happened on a drive that yielded zero points for the Eagles. Jalen Hurts and Saquon Barkley engineered a 95-yard drive on the doorstep of the Bears' end zone.
But a late hit by the Bears forced Hurts to be evaluated for a concussion. Andy Dalton came in and threw a pick on third-and-goal from the 2-yard line.
Moments after the interception, Hurts emerged from the blue medical tent and was cleared to return. A brutal sequence for the Eagles.
The Eagles' defense stood tall. After a Jalen Carter tackle for loss, the Bears faced a fourth-and-goal from the 3-yard line. Chicago coach Ben Johnson decided to go for it instead of taking the field. Not a wise choice. Also not wise? Targeting Quinyon Mitchell . The All-Pro's PBU cements a big stand.
The Eagles' offense can't stop making mistakes. Jalen Hurts short-armed throw in the flat to Saquon Barkley, who had a lot of green ahead of him. Tyler Steen had an unnecessary holding penalty to wipe out a long Barkley run. Then, Tank Bigsby fumbled on a second-and-20 checkdown to gift the Bears the ball at Philadelphia's 15-yard line.
Schematically, I like what Sean Mannion is doing so far. His players are letting him down from an execution standpoint.
That was a less than ideal start for the Eagles' defense — and a masterful opening drive by Bears head coach and play-caller Ben Johnson.
Chicago's misdirection and run game cooked Vic Fangio's unit, marching on an 11-play, 66-yard touchdown drive.
Reminiscent of last year's Black Friday blitz by the Bears.
