Terry Bradshaw is cancer-free, but he says he has never been more afraid. The 78-year-old Hall of Fame quarterback beat early-stage bladder cancer in 2021 and a rare skin cancer in 2022. Every follow-up scan still shakes him. Bradshaw and his wife, Tammy, opened up to PEOPLE this week about both diagnoses, the treatment and the choice to go public. The couple say faith and family got them through, along with what Bradshaw calls courage. He also works as a Fox NFL Sunday analyst. The talk coincides with his new memoir, Looking for Terry.Terry Bradshaw is more scared now than at diagnosisBradshaw says the fear has grown since treatment ended. He still gets recurring scans, and both he and Tammy are “so nervous” every time.“I’m not going to lie to you,” he says, “I’m waiting on it to return.” Adds the four-time Super Bowl champion, “Seriously, I am more scared now than I was the day I found out I had cancer.”Doctors have told him he is cancer-free. Tammy still finds that hard to accept. “It’s hard to trust it, isn’t it?” she says. Many survivors describe the wait between scans as its own kind of strain. Bradshaw is saying it out loud, which stands out from a man known for loud, easy confidence on television.Fear is not the whole story, though. “I’ll tell you what I have. I have courage,” he affirms. How the two diagnoses unfoldedThe first diagnosis came in November 2021. Bradshaw had noticed increased urination, and testing turned up a spot that needed a biopsy. Tammy remembers the doctor saying, “We’ve caught it very, very early. We can do the treatment. Everything should be fine.” He was treated with Bacille Calmette-Guérin immunotherapy. The second cancer was harder. Four months later, in March 2022, neck pain led to the discovery of a 2.5-centimeter tumor on his parotid gland. It was Merkel cell carcinoma, a rare and aggressive skin cancer.Tammy, a former radiology manager, gave him the news herself. Her years in radiation therapy helped her view his health from a “clinical standpoint.” Still, “I was really scared on that one. It was really hard,” she admits. She told him it was treatable, and that “statistically, it’s treatable, and it is statistically possible to cure it, but we’re going to have to really fight hard on this one.”Bradshaw had surgery, then radiation, a “tough treatment,” Tammy notes. Why Bradshaw decided to go publicThe couple first wanted to keep both cancers private. That changed in September 2022 on Fox NFL Sunday. “We were doing a demonstration on the Fox pregame show ... and I couldn’t breathe, and I had to grab [co-host] Howie [Long] to stand up,” Bradshaw recounts. Viewers saw a veteran analyst struggle on air, so staying quiet was no longer realistic. He shared the news that October. It was not for “sympathy,” he insists. “If anything, I want your prayers.”Tammy says they feel “pretty lucky” overall. Her support puts everything in perspective for Bradshaw: “I never thought I’d find this. I heard about this before, but I never thought.” His memoir also covers the highs and lows of his football career and his lifelong clinical depression.Stay updated with the latest Asian Games 2026 news, check the Asian Games medal tally and complete Asian Games schedule.Get the latest Sports News and Live updates.
