Joe Burrow Jokes About Justin Jefferson, Ja'Marr Chase 'Always Bickering' About Stats at LSU

Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow says LSU's 2019 championship season was highlighted by constant stat comparisons between Justin Jefferson and Ja'Marr Chase.

Burrow talked about the competition between his former Tigers teammates on Wednesday's episode of Chase's new podcast Chasing No. 1.

"Justin and Ja'Marr were always bickering about who was gonna have more touchdowns that last year," Burrow said around the 6:50 mark of the podcast.

Burrow added the competition led to the wide receivers being grumpy if "one of them went a game without a touchdown."

It was the 2019 national championship game that ultimately made the difference in the scoring race between Jefferson and Chase.

Both wide receivers went into the game against Clemson with 18 receiving touchdowns on the season before Chase won the scoring race with two touchdown catches to help LSU secure the championship.

That wasn't the first time Chase would surpass his former college teammate. He later broke the rookie record Jefferson set in 2020 with the Minnesota Vikings by recording 1,429 receiving yards during his 2021 campaign with the Bengals.

Chase has had the advantage of building on his connection with Burrow throughout his NFL career. Jefferson, who has played with a wider range of quarterbacks, will be tasked this season with establishing chemistry with new Vikings starter Kyler Murray.

Burrow and Chase are preparing to open the regular season Sunday, Sept. 13 against the visiting Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the same day Jefferson and Murray are slated to take on the visiting Green Bay Packers.
