Talladega vs Daytona: Comparing and Contrasting The Two Superspeedways
Talladega versus Daytona: Comparing the two superspeedways.
The Daytona International Speedway and the Talladega Superspeedway are two of NASCAR's most iconic tracks. Both have similar styles with the bumper-to-bumper pack racing, high speeds, and huge crashes.
Yet, the two tracks are also different in many ways. Here, we will compare and contrast the Daytona International Speedway and the Talladega Superspeedway.
Comparing, Contrasting Daytona and Talladega
The Daytona International Speedway is home of NASCAR's most prestigious race, the Daytona 500. Nicknamed "The Great American Race," the Daytona 500 kicks off every NASCAR season.
NASCAR returns to Daytona later in the season for the nighttime Coke Zero Sugar 400.
The Daytona 500 is considered a crown jewel race along with the Coca-Cola 600, the Southern 500, and the Brickyard 400. While Talladega also hosts two Cup Series races a year, neither are considered a crown jewel event.
Talladega is slightly longer than Daytona at 2.66 miles, while the latter is 2.5 miles long. The start/finish line at Daytona is located in the middle of the track's tri-oval.
Talladega, meanwhile, is one of NASCAR's most unique tracks because its start/finish line is located past the tri-oval and nearly stretches into turn 1.
Despite their differences, Daytona and Talladega are a lot alike. Both tracks provide one of NASCAR's most unique styles of racing, pack racing.
Formerly known as restrictor plate racing, cars race side-by-side within inches of each other and push one another in the tight pack. Because of how the rule packages work at Daytona and Talladega, drivers do this in order to gain a draft, which makes them go faster.
Daytona and Talladega often feature some of NASCAR's largest wrecks, known as "The Big One." Because of the high rates of speed, cars have often flipped over and gone upside down at Daytona and Talladega, too.
