NASCAR may have just witnessed the arrival of its next young superstar.
Tristan McKee is only 16 years old, but he's already accomplished something that nobody in NASCAR Truck Series history has ever done. McKee put together a stunning qualifying lap at Martinsville Speedway to claim the pole position and become the youngest pole sitter in series history.
And he's not even old enough to drive a regular car in some states.
At just 16 years, 2 months and 27 days old, McKee officially etched his name into the record books. It's an unbelievable accomplishment for a driver who is still at the beginning of his racing career, especially considering the level of competition in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series.
Martinsville is no easy place to make a statement, either. The historic short track is known for its tight corners, aggressive racing and extremely difficult passing opportunities. Starting up front can make a huge difference, and McKee has already put himself in the best possible position to compete for the win.
But taking the pole is only part of the story.
Now, the young driver has an opportunity to turn a historic qualifying performance into an even bigger moment by going out and competing for a victory. Winning at this level would be another massive statement and could put even more attention on one of NASCAR's youngest rising talents.
The racing world has seen plenty of young drivers arrive with enormous potential, but McKee is already giving fans a reason to pay attention.
At just 16 years old, he's doing things that drivers twice his age are still chasing.
