With the NASCAR Cup Series championship battle heating up, officials are making a significant change to the rules just days before Sunday's race at Phoenix Raceway.

NASCAR announced Wednesday , Oct. 14, that teams will be permitted to replace their front brake pads and rotors following Saturday's practice and qualifying sessions. The adjustment comes after a string of brake-related problems raised concerns about what could happen when the series returned to another demanding short oval.

It's an unusual exception to NASCAR's normal post-qualifying restrictions, and one that could help prevent a mechanical failure from derailing a driver's championship hopes.

NASCAR Responds to Brake Concerns Ahead of Phoenix

Brake durability has become a growing concern this season, particularly at tracks where drivers repeatedly slow their cars from high speeds.

The issue was especially noticeable at World Wide Technology Raceway on Sept. 13, when multiple Cup Series cars experienced brake failures during the Enjoy Illinois 300.

Phoenix presents a similar challenge. Its relatively flat, 1-mile layout requires heavy braking, and the Cup Series' increased horsepower package has added another variable for teams to manage.

NASCAR Cup Series Senior Managing Director Brad Moran explained the decision Wednesday on SiriusXM NASCAR Radio's "The Morning Drive."

"We've elected that we're gonna let the teams at least look at their brakes and if they need to make a pad change, which is uncommon for us to do on an impound practice," Moran said. "But we've got a procedure set up to do that."

The permission comes with specific limits. Teams can replace front brake pads and rotors after Saturday's on-track sessions, but no other brake system components may be changed under the exception.

NASCAR will also allow teams to inspect their rear rotors during Sunday's pre-race adjustment period. Any issues discovered during those inspections will be handled individually.

What the New Brake Rule Means for Sunday's NASCAR Race

Importantly, NASCAR isn't requiring teams to make any changes. It's giving them the option.

Moran said there won't be a minimum wear threshold or other specific criteria that teams must meet before replacing their front brake components.

"There's no limit," Moran said. "If a team chooses to change their brake pads, it's on them to do so. The teams are allowed to do quite a bit of work in the brake area. We're just giving the opportunity to make sure they get it right and hopefully we don't have any brake issues at Phoenix."

The timing matters for more than just safety.

Sunday's race is the seventh of 10 events in NASCAR's 2026 Chase for the Cup, with Kyle Larson holding a 49-point advantage over Denny Hamlin in the championship standings.

With only four races remaining, a brake failure could have major implications for drivers trying to close that gap.

NASCAR's decision gives teams an additional opportunity to address potential trouble before the green flag rather than discovering a problem after the race begins.

The Cup Series returns to Phoenix Raceway on Sunday, Oct. 18, with the race scheduled for 3 p.m. ET on USA Network and HBO Max.
