NASCAR legend, part of four-generation racing family, dies at 76

NASCAR driver Gary Myers, part of a four-generation legacy in auto racing, died Thursday, Sept. 10, according to a social media post by his son Burt. He was 76.

"Last night I lost my hero," Burt Myers wrote on Facebook. "He fought so hard but was so tired. My daddy is in Heaven and can finally do the things he wanted to do the last several years. Thank God for the times we had. He taught me everything I know. Selfishly I want him here but I know he is much better off now. I miss him so much. I love you Daddy!"

Myers was on the starting line for NASCAR Winston Cup races every year from 1974-78, twice finishing as high as 11th .

Myers also competed on the NASCAR Late Model Sportsman National Championship, the USAR Hooters Late Model Series, the NASCAR Modified National Championship, the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour, and the SMART Modified Tour.

Gary Myers Dies: Patriarch of Racing Family

Beginning with his father, Billy Myers, four generations of the family raced at Bowman Gray Stadium in Winston-Salem, N.C. Gary Myers won 38 races at Bowman Gray Stadium in his racing career.

The NASCAR Cup Series raced 29 races on the quarter-mile track through the 1960s. The Myers Brothers 250 — named after Billy and Bobby, both of whom died racing as young men — was the last Cup race held at the track.

Gary Myers' sons, Burt and Jason, and Burt's son Slate, carried on the family legacy into the 21st century.

"I'm very proud — I couldn't help but to be proud of my boys," Gary Myers said in a 2008 interview . "I just want to see them do well."

When Slate Myers won at Bowman Gray in May 2026, he dedicated the victory to Gary. Slate said he became emotional when he saw his grandfather from the track and later described the moment as "crazy" and "awesome."

Myers' cousin, Danny "Chocolate" Myers, was a general mechanic and refueler for Dale Earnhardt at Richard Childress Racing, and later a SiriusXM NASCAR Radio host recognized by the Motorsports Hall of Fame .
