‘It’s done’: Michael Carrick outlines Lisandro Martinez stance after explosive Man United criticism
Martinez criticised United’s technical director Jason Wilcox for not doing enough to strengthen Carrick’s squad following Tuesday’s defeat at Atletico Madrid
Michael Carrick said he accepted Lisandro Martinez 's apology for his explosive criticisms of Manchester United and director of football Jason Wilcox this week and believes his team can be galvanised by the row.
The United manager said he will carry on picking the Argentinian defender and feels that, far from being distracted, his team could benefit from it.
And Carrick insisted the harmony in the squad has not been disrupted by Martinez complaining about a lack of buys and implying he was not happy with the signings Wilcox did oversee in the summer.
While Martinez, in a statement he released on Thursday, did not retract some of his comments about Wilcox, he held talks with Carrick and the United hierarchy.
And Carrick said: "He's released his statement, and he's realised he's made a mistake, and I think that's enough for all of us to move on with. The acknowledgement of what's been done has certainly been enough, and we've moved on, and we're definitely not looking back at it now."
Carrick confirmed the defender is available for selection for Sunday's trip to Leeds. "He is part of the squad, yeah," said the United manager.
United have only won two of their first nine games in all competitions this season but Carrick feels they can emerge stronger from a trying week.
He added: "There's a real sense and a feeling within the group that we want to do something about this situation, and we want to do something about it really quickly. You understand the situation that came up after the game, but it's been dealt with, and we have moved on, genuinely moved on.
"The squad today was in a fantastic place, better than I've seen it for a while and that's it, plain and simple. We're emotional, we're passionate, we care a lot. Sometimes someone says something that's a little bit maybe shouldn't say it at a certain time, but that doesn't distract us from what we're creating here and the environment and the spirit within the group. It's not affected.
"Certain situations, it can galvanise the group, and it's certainly galvanised the group as this week's progressed, and the boys are in a really good place right now."
United are waiting to see if left-back Luke Shaw and midfielder Kobbie Mainoo are fit enough to return at Leeds.
