Colts defense given top-10 ceiling entering 2026 season

The Indianapolis Colts enter the 2026 season with some uncertainty surrounding their offense, but the potential on the other side of the ball is drawing attention.

The Ringer's Sheil Kapadia wrote in his Sept. 7 AFC South preview that Indianapolis could field "one of the NFL's most improved units" this season, adding that the defense has a top-10 ceiling if its key veterans remain healthier and its rookie class contributes.

"Corner Sauce Gardner was on the field for just four games last year after the big in-season trade. Cornerback Charvarius Ward played in just seven games. And defensive tackle DeForest Buckner was healthy for only 10," Kapadia wrote.

The Ringer's Anthony Dabbundo ranked Indianapolis 16th among NFL defenses in a separate preseason ranking on Sept. 2. He praised a secondary featuring Gardner, Ward and Camryn Bynum but identified the pass rush and young linebacker corps as important variables.

Dabbundo specifically pointed to Laiatu Latu's development as a possible ceiling-raiser. Indianapolis will also lean heavily on its young defenders, with 2026 draft picks CJ Allen, Bryce Boettcher, and A.J. Haulcy all projected for prominent roles.

If that youth develops quickly and Indianapolis gets more games from its noteworthy stars, the defense could become one of the roster's biggest strengths.
