Highlights from the Elmira Girls Swimming & Diving Invitational
Section 4 athletes raised funds for the Women in Pink Foundation while securing spots at the state meet.
Athletes from 13 Section 4 schools united to raise funds for the Women in Pink Foundation (WINK) on Saturday, Oct. 10, at the Elmira Girls Swimming and Diving Invitational at Ernie Davis Academy's Thomas Natatorium in Elmira.
The Splash for a Cure event also saw multiple athletes post qualifying scores or times to secure spots in the New York State Public High School Athletic Association championship meet, which takes place Nov. 20 and 21 at the Webster Aquatic Center near Rochester.
The Women in Pink Foundation raises money for Southern Tier organizations that support breast-cancer treatment, research, and awareness. Elmira's meet had raised a total of about $8,000 over the previous four invitationals.
Some highlights from the two-day meet, which began Friday with diving and concluded Saturday with swimming.

Ithaca, Johnson City, Lansing won team titles
The meet was divided into three classes, with team champions crowned in each while individual results were combined into one.
Ithaca captured the team title in Class A with 334 points, followed by Corning with 213 and Vestal with 176.
The highly contested Class B team title went to Johnson City with 284 points, followed by Waverly with 274, and Owego Free Academy with 271.
Lansing was Class C champion with 386 points.
State qualifying standards reached in four events
Ithaca eighth-grader Olivia Houppert-Singer shared emotional embraces with teammates after hitting the state standard in the 200-yard individual medley with her winning time of 2:11.73. She came in with a top time of 2:14.67, nearly 2 seconds off the state standard of 2:12.84.
Houppert-Singer added a win in the 100 breaststroke and was part of Ithaca's victorious 200 medley relay.
Corning's Alexys Nale with her winning effort of 24.47 in the 50 freestyle. Nale was just off the state standard of 54.36 in the 100 freestyle with her winning time of 54.37.
Divers Ayla Young of Owego Free Academy and Makenzie Blauvelt of Horseheads hit the state 1-meter diving standard of 440.0. Young won with a score of 524.85, followed in second by Blauvelt at 494.30.
Waverly's winning 200 freestyle relay of Meg Atanasoff, Natalie Steck, Brynna Twedt and Audrey Kellogg qualified with a time of 1:40.72. The standard is 1:41.69.
Atanasoff joined Nale in hitting the state standard in the 50 freestyle with her runner-up time of 24.54.
