Alex Ovechkin's journey from a young Russian superstar to a Washington Capitals icon: How 22 years shaped a remarkable NHL legacy

Alex Ovechkin will retire after the 2026-27 season, closing a 22-year NHL career played entirely for the Washington Capitals. The 41-year-old captain told his teammates before practice on Monday, October 5, in Arlington, Virginia. He leaves as the league's all-time leading goal scorer, with 929 goals at the time of the announcement and the 2018 Stanley Cup on his résumé. He signed a one-year contract on July 2 and shared the news before the home opener against Pittsburgh so he could concentrate on the games. How did Alex Ovechkin go from a young Russian star to a Capitals icon?Alex Ovechkin was 20 when he debuted on October 5, 2005, against the Columbus Blue Jackets. On his first shift, he hit defenseman Radoslav Suchy so hard that a pane of glass behind the net came loose. Then he scored twice in a 3-2 win. Washington still finished last in the Southeast Division that year at 29-41-12, but the building had changed. Ovechkin scored 52 goals and won the Calder Trophy as the league's top rookie. The wins came slower than the highlights. The Capitals made the playoffs for the first time with him in 2007-08, the year he took the Art Ross Trophy with 112 points. They won the Presidents' Trophy in 2009-10, 2015-16 and 2016-17, yet never got past the second round. He collected three Hart Trophies as league MVP and still heard the same question every spring. That changed in his 13th season. The Capitals beat Pittsburgh, Tampa Bay and Vegas on the way to the 2018 Stanley Cup, and Ovechkin led the NHL with 15 playoff goals and won the Conn Smythe Trophy. "Everybody knew he was going to be a legend of the game, but to be considered a legend of the game, you have to win the Stanley Cup," teammate Tom Wilson said. Why is Alex Ovechkin retiring after the 2026-27 season? He points to his family and his body. Ovechkin made the call this summer after talking with his wife, Nastya. "I'm not 20 years old and I want to play with my kids when they're growing up playing hockey, playing soccer, playing basketball. I want to be healthy enough to do that kind of stuff," he said. The news did not land out of nowhere. Wilson and Dylan Strome said Ovechkin hinted at it last week during a team dinner in Annapolis, Maryland. "You never know after a couple beers if it's like full-truth or half-truth or what," Wilson said. Coach Spencer Carbery only knew for certain when Ovechkin called him on Sunday.Washington spent the summer adding Alex Tuch, Jordan Kyrou, Boone Jenner and Vincent Desharnais after missing the playoffs last season. Ovechkin played all 82 games and led the team with 32 goals and 64 points, yet the Capitals finished three points behind Philadelphia for third in the Metropolitan Division. How did Alex Ovechkin change hockey in Washington?Former goalie Olie Kolzig played 16 seasons for the Capitals and now works in player development for the club. He has a short answer. "He totally turned D.C. into a 100 percent hockey town where maybe that wasn't the case," Kolzig said. Washington went back to red as its primary home jersey color in 2007-08, and the "Rock the Red" era followed, with crowds in red filling the arena. The numbers back him up. USA Hockey counted 12,856 registered players in Washington, Maryland and Virginia in 2005-06, Ovechkin's rookie year. Its most recent report, from 2024-25, lists 22,222. That is a 73 percent jump, and the area calls it the Ovechkin Effect. Wilson sees it in the kids who grew up watching him. "There's hundreds of thousands of kids that have played the game because of him and look up to him every day," he said. What made the Alex Ovechkin and Sidney Crosby rivalry so special?Neither player got a vote on being compared. The Capitals took Ovechkin first overall in 2004. Pittsburgh took Sidney Crosby first in 2005, after a lockout wiped out a full season. Ovechkin won the Calder with 106 points, and Crosby finished second with 102.The playoffs gave it teeth. They met four times, always in the second round. Pittsburgh won in 2009, 2016 and 2017 and lifted the Cup each time. Washington finally won in 2018 and did the same.Time softened it. "He's had a huge impact on it, on and off the ice," Crosby said last season. Evgeni Malkin rarely speaks after morning skates, but he made an exception on Monday and said Ovechkin "did everything for a team, a league."What records is Alex Ovechkin leaving behind?Start with goals. Ovechkin passed Wayne Gretzky's 894 on April 6, 2025, with his 895th at the New York Islanders, a mark long viewed as out of reach. Add 77 playoff goals and his total of 1,006 sits second in NHL history to Gretzky's 1,016.The shelf is crowded. He holds the records for power-play goals (331), game-winning goals (141), overtime goals (27) and empty-net goals (72). He has the most 30-goal seasons (20) and 40-goal seasons (14), and he ties Gretzky and Mike Bossy with nine 50-goal seasons.Durability may be the quieter record. Last year he became the fifth player to play all 82 games at age 40 or older. He has missed only 51 games to injury, and his 3,881 hits are third most since the league began counting them in 2005-06. Former linemate Chris Clark says fans miss what teammates saw. "I think he'd trade that all away for two or three more Stanley Cups," Clark said. What happens next for Ovechkin and the Capitals?Do not expect Ovechkin to chase a farewell tour. "I'm going to focus on my game," he said. "I'm going to focus to help the team to win. Obviously, if some different teams want to do something, yeah, why not? But to be honest with you, I'm not going to pay attention to that."Strome laid out the team's aim. "Our goal is to obviously compete for a Stanley Cup and give Ovi the best chance to have one more," he said.Where he plays next is still open. He has floated finishing with Moscow Dynamo, the program where he grew up, but he has made no announcement.Stay updated with the latest Asian Games 2026 news, check the Asian Games medal tally and complete Asian Games schedule.Get the latest Sports News and Live updates.
